I haven't bought many vehicles from dealers, but I'm looking at a '99 vfr at a dealership.. Is a $295.00 processing fee and a $149.50 doc fee common when it comes to buying vehicles from dealers? That ends up being a pretty decnet percentage of the cost of the bike.

Obviously having the dealer pay the state fees would be ideal, but I would be okay with paying the actual cost. No reason the dealership should make $200 on filling out a form and sending it to the DMV.

Since you seem to be serious about buying the bike, I'm sure they realize you want it. Tell them you'll pay the actual DMV fees, not the BS they're adding to it, or you'll walk away from the deal. I can't imagine they'll pass up the sale over it. If they will, then so be it. I'd keep looking on principle.

I'm not sure how this would come into play, but the dealership is in Illinois and I live in Iowa...

Are you doing this all over the phone then? Email? Just give them the price you want to pay them, and tell them to work out the details internally i.e. lower the price of the bike to include the fees, get rid of the fees, whatever. But "$XXXX.XX" is what you are writing the check for.

ebay shows two '99s. $2.5k that hasn't hit reserve yet and another at a buy it now price of $2.7k. I've seen a few 2000's for around $3000 to $3200.

Okay maybe I don't have the best information... I got my 2003 for $2750. Apparently that was a steal. So I don't know what to tell you about the price... good luck!

With all the PM's and Ebay bidding it's hard to tell exactly what is going on. The values of bikes can be ascertained by acessing the same websites used for automobiles. So far as these fees, The State of Iowa has a website with probably more that you want to know about getting an out of state bike registered and liscensed.

IMO this dealership is playing you. I'd lowball the shit out of them and then see what happens. Use the pricing you find on the official valuation websites and even some of what you learn here.

Best bet, don't buy from a dealer. You will pay more than from a private party every time.

That is what I've decided, to do... lowball them to offset the fees. If they take it everyone wins, if not this is not the bike for me.

Thanks for all the adivce guys!

Junyr, I think I know the dealer your talking about. In Crystal Lake IL right? I just purchased a 2003 VFR abs with 7000 miles from them, about 2 months ago, in the winter. This is the off season, they need cash. Believe me they will make you the deal you want. The original price they wanted was too high with my trade in, I let them know, and asked if they had another bike I could get into for what I wanted to spend, and over the phone the owner talked with me and dropped the price drastically, and gave me Out the door price, and that is what I paid. I know these guys and they want to sell that bike, they will do whatever it takes, it has been listed on ebay for several months, mine was on ebay when I bought it. If you are not talking about the dealer in Crystal Lake, then disregard. Let me know if you have questions, I will be happy to help and give you the owner's name.

That's the one. I'm going to toss a bid in a couple of days and see what happens. If you look at the bike on their website they are showing $3799 for asking price which is just silly. $2799 is closer to good, but I don't want $450 in fees then sales tax tacked on to that..

If I get it it's all good and looks to be a pretty sweet bike, but if not then this isn't the bike for me and the search will continue.
