Do you have the repair manual for either 1998 or 2000? I ride a 98 but not recall that piece. It could be something emissions related I'm thinking... It seems like we have manuals posted up around her somewhere. Or you could try looking at a schematic on bikebandit.com.

I have the honda service manual with all the updates from 98-01 and there is no mention or pic of this part with the added pipe. As you know on the 98 model the part looks identical but without the tube attached. I have both a 98 california and 49 state motor and neither of them have this tube so I doubt it is for emissions. The only other difference between 98-00 I can think of would be something to do with the later 5th gen bikes having an automatic choke that was not offered on the 98 model, maybe it leads to a sensor that tells the choke when the bike is up to temp to deactivate?

You are correct, it is where you connect the hose that goes to the fast idle wax unit on the tb's.

so that's why I didn't recognize it... that and the fact that I rarely look at the engine... and the fact that when I do, I merely focus on task at hand as quick as possible so I can go ride...

that reminds me. I'm gonna go riding in a few...
