I quit smoking one year ago yesterday. My daughter come home from school after watching them cancer videos and asked me to quit. I told her I would try and so I proceeded to quit cold turkey and it was the best way for me. Anyway, thought I would share and let everyone know that if I can do it, anybody can!!

I quit many times. The last time was just over a year ago. That'll be the last time I quit because I hate being a quitter.

I likewise did it cold turkey and so did my dad. Congrats to you L J!

I am a light smoker (1/2 pack a day) and I have quit and relapsed sevaral times in the past. It seems to me like I always start back up after having several cocktails with friends who smoke. I am going to try to quit again soon since I hardly ever drink any more. I will however will continue to occasional smoke "medicinal" herbs LOL!!

I quit ten months ago, after smoking regularly for 40 years. I decided i'd like to see my granddaughters grow up if I can.

Congrats on one year; keep it going one day at a time.

    Congrats!

Tomorrow will be one month for me.

Still dip now and then, but one thing at a time, right?

Great to hear about your smoke-free anniversary! I am sure you made your daughter extremely happy and proud of you by quitting.

I too have quit smoking about a year ago.

What was my reason??? A pretty girl!

But it's not what you think.

I was dating this girl for a month and she would smoke regularly as would I. It was late January and I had your typical stomach virus that was going around. Being sick, I did not feel like Smoking. I would try maybe one day but after a few puffs I quickly realized why I never liked to smoke while being congested and sick.

She had come over to my place with the intentions of making me "feel better". I was congested and fllat out woozy. I had eaten a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich an hour prior to her arrival at my front door. I hear the doorbell, I get up and make my way to the door. I opened the door to be hit by a wall of smoke. She must have finished a cigarette a few seconds before ringing the bell. Once the smoke clears, I see her standing there with a blockbuster movie box in hand and a smile on her face. The initial blast of the smoke, even while being congested did not have a good affect on me. She leans in for a kiss as do I. We lock lips but something different has happened than your typical "hello how are you" kiss...

Within the time frame of one second, the following events occurred.

Physical contact has occurred, and the foulest, ashiest, taste lurking deep within the bowls of a once extra pleasant mouth have found their way to not only my taste buds but to my olfactory glands as well! Immediately they send out distress signals to my brain which in a millisecond sends a rush signal to my stomach to evacuate the premises immediately!

In a frantic move i try to pull away because I about to propel a slurry of Campbell's tomato soup and grilled cheese in her direction! She had placed her one free hand on the side of my head locking my ear in with her thumb to the front and index finger running behind my ear with trailing fingers within my hair. I pulled back maybe 4 inches, I could not escape her grasp, before she became covered from the neck down in Campbell's tomato soup and grilled cheese. Surprisingly, not much had gotten on my floor except for a few rouge projectiles because of her low cut shirt she had on beneath her unzipped parka.

Needless to say the relationship changed after that indecent. We went our own ways a week later.

I went through some personal reflection that evening and made some life changing decisions.

I will never smoke another cigarette.
I will never date a girl whom smokes.
I will never eat tomato soup and grilled cheese again at the same time.

Congrats, that is a very difficult thing to do, I like your reason. Now the not funny part. By the time I was 16 my whole family smoked, Dad Mom and my brother and I, I quit at 22 when a girl said to me that kissing me was like licking an ash tray. The rest of the family kept it up. My mother died at 64 from emphysema, suffocated to death slowly over 6 years. My father quit around 60, he is 84, very weak , down to 5'5" and 85lb, needs a bypass but cant because his lungs would not survive the surgery. I was just told at new years my brother has cancer in both lungs and it has spread to his chest wall.
The number 1 healthiest thing you can do for your body is to quit smoking. I wish all the power to you that you need to stay smoke free.

I love to tell smokers that “ Even animals run from smoke!”

For me it was GUM for about six months. The problem was I was used to putting something into my mouth. So i went and bought some Trident gum and chewed on it for a while (vs. food). And exercise, I try to lift weights and take jogs or ride my stationary bike to stay fit now.
