The 5th gen shock is a bit longer. I believe by about 1cm.

Absolutely correct, the 98-01 shocks are 325mm while the 02+ are 315mm long. These are the mounting eye-eye dimensions by the way.

But then wouldn't it still fit but lower the bike by 1cm????? What's the difference is bolt sizes, mounting style, entire shock and spring diameter fitment????

It would drop the rear of the bike considerably more than 1cm because of the way the shock is mounted on vfrs. Not sure if mounting eyes are the same diamiter or width either, that could further complicate things. I am sure someone on this site has the exact measurements. IMHO it would not be worth any fabrication to mount a stock 5th or 6th gen rear shock. Much better options are out there for more adjustible shocks such as the 929 and F4i rear shocks if you are willing to do a little fab work to avoid the high dollar Ohlins or comparible brand name boltons.

It's about a 4:1 ratio, so the change in ride right height would be more like 40mm. The mounting is exactly the same.

well the shock arrived in the end bit of snow an this country goes to to the dogs,
anyhow you were right about the size it was ten mm short ,
easy fix though i turned a ten mm collar to go on top of the top bracket but found the bolt was'nt long enough so i cut the bolt off drilled it to except a longer bolt turned the head flat an welded it in works a treat

Great work and ingenuity to get that to fit. Is the stock 6th gen shock really better than the stock 5th gen shock and is there a travel difference between the two? I'd hate to see you have less travel on the 6th gen shock and it cause problems for ya.

You have learned a valuable lesson, believe about 10% of what you hear on the internet. I'm surprised somebody didn't try to sell you something that you didn't need. I have found that a little ingenuity can go a long ways and that just because somebody hasn't done it, doesn't mean it can't be done. Congrats on running your own course, using your bean, and making it happen.
