Well... I decided to adjust my throtle cable today while I had some spare time and somehow tilting the tank up caused a short to the fuel pump. I know I should have disconected the battery before working on the bike(rule #1) but it was just a quick adjustment and I was not going to do any electrical work so I proceeded. Oh no! smoke!!! The lead from the pump burned its plastic sheath off all the way through the harness!!! If that is not bad enough, once I got the real cowl off I found that the connecter from the stator to the RR is charred as well. Luckly I have 2 harnesses for my bike from other motors but I am not looking forward to the install. Is there any way to bench test the RR and stator while off the bike? It is going to be a little while before I will be able to start it and would like to know if just 1 or both components have failed. I am leaning on the stator being toast because the RR has been recently replaced and I am hoping it did not take my new RR to the graveyard withit
You know, they <might> be able to do it at an auto zone or napa or something, but I can't say for sure. I know they can check things like the ecu for my old scout. I bet we have some smarter members on here, though that can tell you how to do it yourself. I am not very wiring friendly. I am doing well just to keep from being electrocuted. when I first saw your title, I thought it was gonna be another house burned down message. It seems like we had that happen to a member a year or two back around this time.
Well I guess this is better than my home burning down... I am going to start diasembly tommorow and pick the better of the two harnesses I have to replace it with. As far as the stator and RR are concerned I think I will contact tightwad in a few days or so to pick his brains on the subject. I am sure I am going to need some replacement connecters from him at the very least.
