I currently own a 2001 Honda magna. Like the bike but want something different and more sporty. I spotted this 98 VFR at my local honda dealer. What do you guys think? Anything I should look for, does anyone know the previous owner of this vfr? Opinions and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I came and logged on to this site because you guys are the best vfr owner's out there. Thanks again,

You know, first I give you the seat off my Magna and now you want my forum too? I saw Lowell, AK and I knew it was you, Lance. That looks like a clean 5th Gen with decent mileage and the price is fair; I paid $3K for my 4th Gen '96 with similar mileage and a bunch of upgrades. Shoot for around 3.5K and that's a really good buy. Whether it's this VFR or another, you'll love whatever you get; great bikes. I have two of them right now. Good Luck.

Looks like an exceptionaly clean 5th to me and a fair price. As stated above I would shoot for $3500 and meet someware in the middle. Before purchase check the connecters to th RR and see if they are yellowed (burnt) or corroded as this is a sign of a charging problem. you should also take a look at the rr itself and see if it is the updated version. If you search this forum there are comparison pictures so you can tell the difference. If it is the original rr that came with the bike plan on replacing it asap because most of them failed before 25K on the odometer

That high mount exhaust looks nice. It has an aftermarket screen which is not a bad thing, but like everything else it is personal taste on whether you will like that screen.

Looks clean from the pics. I paid $3800 for my 98 this summer and it has a few scrapes on it. Only 15k on the clock, but 23k is really nothing on these bikes. It's only about 2k a year, so they didn't ride that much! Like the others have said, try for $3500 and see what they say.

    Was the 16k service done?

It looks exceptionally clean. I say pull the trigger. Try and get it for 3.5k.

I paid $3,800 for my '98 with 24k miles on it, Micron hi-mount exhaust , Sergeant saddle and front suspension upgrade by Traxxion Dynamics. The bike was very clean, but it had not had the 16k valve inspection done, which added about $450 to the price (of course, valve clearances were well within spec!). So $4k seems like a pretty good price for that bike. You'll love it!

'98 and '99 5th generation bikes are like finding gold nuggets.

If I had more storage space at my home I would be hoarding them.

Like others have said here, be aware of the R/R problem. Other than that, just enjoy.

Don't wait too long and let some other buyer jump on it. Pull the trigger !

Seems like a good bike and if you can get it out the door for that price then you've gotten a great deal. If you have to pay tax, tag, and dealer fees you're looking at another $300-$350 which makes it just an ok deal. As previously mentioned finding a low mile 5th gen like that is becoming harder and harder nowadays and you lucked out since you found one of the two years that don't have catalytic converters installed.

    Regards,
    Rollin

Thanks for all the info guys. I am going friday afternoon to ride it. Is there anything I need to listen for when I start it up? When I ride it? Hopefully this will work out. I went and looked at it last night but couldn't ride it due to rain. I did notice some dirt build-up on the swing-arm when I stuck my hand up around the swing arm, is this normal? Bike was bought new by a 62 year old man and he traded it in on a new 2008 cbr1000. Anyway, thanks for help, really appreciated.

Nothing wrong with owning an 08 CBR1000. I nearly bought one a couple of months ago. It would have been $6700 out the door.

He should have kept the VFR though.

    wait!

the 5th gen is the way to go but you should seriously consider waiting for a 2000 yellow vfr. the yella bike is faster and smoother than the other 5th gen bikes. this is a known fact. something to consider

LJ, like Sparky says..."the 5th gen is the way to go" but....stay with the '98, unless you like to ride around with a hot catalytic exhaust

Oh, I almost forgot, red is the fastest (verified by the official VFRworld timing association)

btw, VFRworld timing determined that it was a '00 yellow that had it's yellow replaced with red plastics
