I am interested in purchasing a new 07 Interceptor and am worried about the high mount exhaust. I have been considering a bunch of different bikes with the 919 being one of them. From cruising the other forums it seems as though any bike with a high mount center exit exhaust is going to cause what they call exhaust stink on the riders clothes and worse on the passengers. If this is the case I would probably start looking for a Gen 5 with the low mount exhaust instead. I searched on the site and didn't find much on the subject so I'm hoping it isn't really an issue with the Gen 6 VFR but from what the other sites say it's an issue with all bikes running this exhaust configuration. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've had my 6th gen for almost 10k miles now and I have yet to experience this with mine. It just isn't an issue. I've ridden with a passenger and it has never affected them either. I've never even smelled my exhaust while riding or sitting at a stop, even for minutes at a time. You won't have any problems with a 6th gen.

I've ridden several other bikes many many times with undertail exhaust and can't say I've ever heard of this... but I can see it happening. I have a funny feeling that those who have experienced this with other bikes have one or two things going on. First is a leak in the exhaust somewhere prior to the mufflers themselves. Most likely this would be where the slip-on meets the midpipe and be due to things not being installed properly. Second would be an aftermarket can for the undertail that doesn't come back far enough under the passenger pillion and thus the exhaust gases don't make it behind the bike before rising up.

Concerning the 6th gen for sure... its not an issue and not something to concern yourself about.

I've never had an issue with exhaust smell and I"m running catless headers into a Leo Vince slipon with the baffles removed. But I do love the smell of exhaust. It makes me dizzy:biggrin:

I've got over 87,000 km on my 06 and have never noticed anything of the sort. When it is cold, and at a stop, I can smell the exhaust a bit but never to the extent it stayed on my suits. Simply not an issue.

I have noticed the issue, BUT I believe my bike is running a bit rich AND I spend a lot of my commute stopped at red lights and in slow moving traffic.

i get exhaust smell on me when i ride in a group.
you also have to remember that ur in the open air, on a road, following cars that spit out exhaust, and the cars might not be tuned well.

if i am by my self(or 2 up) and not following any one, or thing. i never get exhaust smell.
but after riding in a group i do. and i think its because im riding in some one else's exhaust trail. riding in stop and go traffic will make you smell like a tail pipe too.

I rode my since 06 with thousands of miles, Never noticed..................The smell probably from the traffic :) If you worry about the smell from the exhaust my recommendation for you is to move to PA and live with the Amish riding the wagon.
Here is your ride if you worry about the smell

Weaving through all of the road apples they drop is quite an adventure, especially when there's a pile of fresh poo in a blind curve. It's a shitty experience.

The clothes stinking is a non issue if you left the factory cats in place, my clothes don't stink on my VFR however on my gixxer i have a full exhaust on it and it def makes my right leg pant and my shirt smell like unburnt gas.

Sounds/smells like the Gixxer is running rich brother. Same usually goes for VFR's too. If you can smell it after warm up, provided you don't have your nose up the pipe, it's becuase it's running rich. Usually.

I put a generic map on my PCIII before I could get it properly tuned, leading my back side to smell a litlle mechanical. After the tune and the right fuel mixture, smell was completely gone. The ladies still stayed away, so on to a new theory regarding that.

Yea its running rich in the lower revs range, i had it dynoed not long ago, it pulled 126rwhp but between 5k-8k range the bike ran a rich 11.1:1 A/F and then goes to about 13.5~13.8 A/F thereafter. Rich or not, its still not going to have any clean smell to it, anything short of race gas....boy that stuff smells nice to me.
