Anyone look at the members list lately? Very valueable usernames are being tied up from people who visit once and are never to be heard from again. Some in fact have not even posted once. When I came on board, I tried just to use my name as a username and was hooped right off the start. And now I look back and really only one with a variation of my name as a username are active here at all. I think one of them has 28 posts.

Is there a fix that does not create a whole pile of work for our great moderators? Could the site be programed to automatically vet a user that say after 2 years has not posted? Or do we even want this or care?

I mean my name is who I am. If I can't use it, no one would know who I am. I have had to resort to being part number....like a statistic...or a bike part.:frown:

I think we like it this way. As a part number, we can easily look you up for when we need you and also not worry about you as we desire. Should something break you are easy to find a replacement for and if we are notified that your part number has been cancelled, replaced, or upgraded, you can easily be removed from the system at a later date and time.

We need to pad our member numbers. Padding is important. Numbers rule!

<<<<Hey look at my post count!

That's a good idea on weeding out the wannabes. As a side note that's why I don't reply to introduction threads because I notice that it's pretty much their only post.

I think we should have a way of counting useful posts versus overall posts. I'd be screwed right out of the box, but at least I'd have an accurate feel for how useless I am without meaning to be.

Kind of an automatic self-help program... Randy gets to be the counselor!

What?! Hell, that's how I got 1/2 my post count.

+1 on Randy's OP. I hate seeing tons of members of forums with zero or 1 post. Maybe it wouldn't be bad to deep 6 'em, and if they resurface they can re-register w/a new username.

OTOH, long dormant members w/low post counts will sometimes show up with a really great post when you least expect it.

And tho I registered here a few yrs ago I only got active on the forum a few months ago. So there's the other 1/2 of my pro/con argument.

On the other hand, the right acknowledgement just might draw them in closer. Who knows. But tkx for the support.

A lot of people are lurkers and there isn't anything wrong with that. You have to be a member and be logged in to be able to do certain things, other than post.

I wouldn't limit it by # of posts over some timeframe, but perhaps last active date. Of course some people may be reading an RSS feed and not actually coming to the site, so I would think a warning email that if you don't take action your account will be deleted is in order.

So, 34468 Randy, you mean to tell me that 34468 is not your first name? What a fraud!

I mentioned this awhile back, but it is a delicate subject. It is all up to Michael and what he believes is fair, or simply whatever that he desires since he owns the site. IMO, I believe that non-active members should be deleted after a long absence.....it would have to be determined how long is long enough. Even so, it is not that hard to start up a new account....just ask all of these spamming bastages who barrage us each day.
