Picked Up A NICE '96!

    I think you did well VT Viffer. I would rather pay a bit more for a pristine example than get a "bargin" on one that is beat up.

    The one on CL that I found has 74k miles on it and some fairing damage.

    Mine really is pristine... I passed up some really nice pearl white 3G's to get what I have now. I actually wanted a 3G bike more than the 4G, but my current bike came up on craigslist, so I jumped.

    The sum of the visual damage to my bike when I got it was a 2mm nick on the upper fairing, and the half moon in the tail fairing above the taillight was split vertically. There was also a little scrape on the frame above the right footpeg. I think that it went down on that side for the original owner, but was obviously fixed with all new OE Honda parts. The side fairings on that side are about 1/4 of a shade off, but certainly OE color. Also is a good reason that it has a 2Bros pipe on it, too.

    Once I heard it start immediately from dead cold (I asked that the seller wait until I got there to start it) and settle into a high choked idle, I knew. The money was already on fire in my pocket. It has been maintained well, and the engine told a good story.

    Got side-tracked (the cancer is back, but in the Kidney this time so it's a long term worry - if I left it totally alone I wouldn't be in any real danger for 7-10 years! - and pretty easily taken care of so I'm OK) but today was too nice and had nothing else to do go grabbed my cut-off wheel and did this today -- Inna word - AWESOME SOUNDING!!!! For the near zero cost of 6-8 dremmel fiber wheels and a couple of hours leisurely working on the bike I don't think there could be a better mod :thumbsup: Sounds *much* more like I wanted... ( I *did* crank it up with just to open collector for a few revs, not enough to fry the valves but just to hear it... nice! )

    Thanks for the guide and info, I didn't think I could be that much happier with this bike but... :biggrin:

    Question...

    In preparing to button the can back up after the gutting, I was wondering - Is there any disadvantage to shortening up the whole canister? I prefer the 'shorty' can look and i had to really drill out the spot welds a little wide - plus, on the '97 anyway, there were 6 instead of 4... Instead of filling them in or putting a large fastener to cover the holes, would it make a significant change to shorten it 2-3 inches and just drill a couple of new ones to secure the endcap?

    (So in love with the sound now, LOL!)

    Mine also had 6 spot welds in three pairs. I drilled all six not knowing that only the rearward most set of three secured the end cap.
    Filled the forward 3 with JB, smoothed then sanded/polished some once set.

    I don't think shortening a few inches would have any effect other than a cosmetic one.
    Remember that the entire interior is a packed baffle so...

    ... if you cut the can, say where my sloppy yellow line appears you'd also need to get in there with your dremel and cut a bit further in just through the baffle wall (red line.) Otherwise the end cap couldn't insert... then maybe peen the end of baffle out some against the outer wall.

    By the way, have you seen this?

    Hadn't, Thanx...

    Watched it, had to have it... :biggrin:

    I cut maybe 1mm behind the second/inner baffle with a chop saw and but left the fiberglass/whatever around the outside and baffled inlet pipe (not that there's much left of it :rolleyes:) and slapped the cap back on... about 50% louder from 2K-4.5K, just a little more bark from 5K - 7K (I'm turning 5.5K @ 70, so that's good, not too loud on the freeway, but loud enough to be heard) and awesome from 7K on up... the under 4.5K is very 60's V-8 Mustang-ish - total eargasm :thumbsup:

    (testing, if this works, I'll get a clip of it running through the gears - it sounds pretty spot on on my computer but I've got a pretty intense audio setup (do some A/V editing for my brothers church))

    Chinese for "Hacker" (Literal translation is (I believe) Man Who Thinks Cleverly As His Occupation) On the inside of the windscreen is the Japanese for hacker and on the tank is Japanese script for Honda...

    ~40$ on eBay (Linky) though they were initially a tight fit, I had to lightly sand the brackets on the bike to get them in... also, just FYI, they are hollow, so the rears gather water when they are "up" since i never have them down with the solo cowl... Also picked up Brake/Clutch levers from the same guy with the same anodization...


    Thanks, it sounds even better running through the gears, will try to get a clip of that soon (weather has been crap here in Dallas, actually *snowed* yesterday - nothing on the ground, but the possibility of black ice kept me off the bike for the day :frown:

    Been following developements on "The Weather Channel", from bad to worse it seems!
    Doubt you've been out doing sound tests! :smow:

    We've gotten our 1st snow of the season this afternoon. So far just a light dusting on the grass & wet pavement.
    Most important, NO need to sand/salt the road surface!
    (Heard Jim Cantore say they don't need or use salt down your way... Lucky You! :redface:)

    8:00 in the evening, system hasn't completely passed yet, things could get worse overnight requiring road treatment.

    THAT would pretty much end the riding season even if we get more warm days... unless we get one or several good warm rain deluges to clean all the disgusting filth from the pavement. :tsk:

    My recently acquired '96... want to do too much in the off-season to deal with trying to heat up the Summer Man-Cave (garage) for precision work!
    (It's 18F outside right now!)

    I fashioned a see-saw ramp from a 16' laminated staging plank and brought it down the bulkhead stairs to the HQ!

    Ready for freshening up and trickin' out!

    Now that it's stripped down I got a good look at the infamous 'PAIR ' system...
    Removal of 'THAT ' will be the 1st order of business. :puke:

    Fab-ing 4 small exhaust port covers shouldn't be a problem, and vacuum caps over the intake spigots will seal them nicely.
    Clamps, fasteners maybe hose will go into the spares... the rest into the dumper! :tclaw:

    I would be scared as shit to attempt to put my '96 down a bulkhead and into my basement... yikes!

    But I'm right there with you, brother... PAIR crap has got to go. Do you have an idea on how you're going to fab up the plugs for the cylinder heads?

    I was thinking that some aluminum sheet stock, my bench grinder and hand drill should make a set pretty quick - did you have a better idea?

    Got myself pretty well set up for this sort of tinkering over the years, there isn't much I won't try when it comes to minor metal fabrication.

    Shouldn't be that hard, just some muscle... figure two guys pushing up to, or near tipping point, hold the brake, second guy hoist up rear of ramp OR go 'round to the front and step down to raise to level, roll out.

    At least it's not my other one down there!

    Have needed to load/unload the 'Kaw' on a ramp several times over the years, that can be a challenge!

    Backing it down solo on a short ramp from the high tailgate of a 4WD pickup gives new meaning to the word "Faith". :pray:

    And YES, one of the screws attaching the pipes (covers when I make them) to the exhaust ports is missing, fell into the works someplace, swingarm, exhaust labyrinth, ???
    More take-down to perform, it'll reveal itself when it's ready.

    Meanwhile, I need to head outside to start shoveling out of our recent 18" addition w/drifts and still falling, "UGH!" :mad:
