I am having a lot of trouble finding much info on how to gut the catalytic converter. I'd like to remove the whole chamber and weld in tubes, anybody done this? Ultimately I'd like to make it a true 4 into 2 system, is there any reason i shouldn't? Not enough back pressure?

There are plenty of reasons you shouldn't. Start with illegal for street use. Damaging a very expensive part. Mucking up the stock tuning. Wasting your time and energy for a small potential gain. Those are the first things that 'pop' into my head.

Well I scored a second exhaust system cheap for starters so if I mess it up(which I doubt I will), it wont be a big issue. Second, this isn't any different than people putting on a set of Motad, Delkevic, or 98-99 headers. Third, very few bikes have cats in them. And I enjoy working on my bike, even for small gains, so I dont consider it wasting my time.

Elwray, thanks for the link, i couldnt find it... exactly what I was looking for.

I'm not fortunate enough to have a plasma cutter. I'll be doing it the old fashioned way(grinder and cut off wheels. Its very loud and very messy.

This is an entheusiests forum, we like to play around with our bikes.
I have removed my Cat, and the bike definitely runs cooler, better, and spins up faster.
If we want to "waste our time and energy" its up to us.

Thanks for defending me. BTW, I love the wheels on your RWB, next time I do a tire change I am getting mine done gold as well.

As for gutting the cat, i think I've got enough knowledge now to pull it off. Welding the plate back over scares me a little but if I mess it up I will just keep trying until I get it right. Worst case, I ruin a perfectly good set of headers that cost me very little.

I asked if there were reasons I shouldn't do a true 4 into 2 exhaust.

I am DEFINITELY doing the cat gut but might cut the exhaust off at the cat and then run two pipes all the way to the mufflers thus eliminating the 4 into 2 into 1 into 2 system

Well I gutted the mufflers today. Took about 3 hours. I cut behind the weld and the entire baffle pulled straight out. Welded the endcaps back on and it sounds great.

Tomorrow I will gut the cat. I feel a little more comfortable with the welding so it should take less time. I had a few burn throughs, gotta take it slow and do short welds.

this is a 6th gen. I fought the urge to start it with the exhaust off. If the tail didnt look so empty with the exhaust off, I'd love to run a moto gp exhaust.
