well. long arguments short, Its goin out. i tightened it, got the pinch bolt gooden tight, as i turn the wheel the chain gets tight, then loose then tight again.

itl last through the year, im still convinced i hadent tightened the pinch bolt enough.

If you want to be sure that you tightened the pinch bolt enough you can get a relatively inexpensive torque wrench at AutoZone or a comparable auto parts store. They cost as little as $25 and can give you a great peace of mind in settling the "how tight is it" debate.

If you look at the Honda manual it states how many lb/ft or N/m that the bolt should be tightened. You can't get more clear than that.

And please, for everyone's sake, please don't start a "How do I use a torque wrench thread" They come with a owner's manual.

MIKE, you simply don't want to believe the truth because it wil cost you about $160 to end your chain problems.

It's easily possible to put a paint mark on the toothed adjuster ring to check for movement.

I'm anticipating your NEXT thread: "I stripped the threads in the swingarm where the pinch bolt goes."

Again, your chain is WORN OUT, and inconsistent tension as wheel is rotated is another indication, same problem you had on your '86, haven't you learned??

You ask questions but refuse to listen to the answers !

And if you want more chain problems in the future, be sure to replace your O-ring chain with a cheap, non O-ring item and don't bother to replace your sprockets.

Till today i hadent actually inspected the chain, just tightened it and rode off. seeing the unconsistant tension shows its bad.

tho i might try replacing the masterlink. if that link is what is mostly bad then it will insure that it lasts the year out. or just forget it as i only have a couple weeks left.

next year i plan on getting +a few teeth on the rear sproket. how sagnificantly will this improve my gas mileage?

ARE you deliberately acting dumb ( as most here are convinced) or what and why ???

The master link has exactly nothing to do with your difficulties. It's worn just like the rest of the chain, so the master link is only 1/112th of your problem.

Don't mess with the master link cuz any attempt to replace it can end in DISASTER if it's not done EXACTLY right, it helps to have some special tools, and frankly your mechanical skills are probably not up to the task....

The masterlink may be worn, so If you replace it that should end your chain problems. What happens, is the masterlink stretches and you need to get a new one. If you don't mind spending some time, you can boil your current masterlink for about 20 minutes. This should reconfigure the molecules in the masterlink resulting in essentially a new masterlink. There should be a Youtube video for it but I'm too lazy to look.

 it would be bad because friction removed material of the rings? how would boiling fix it when metal is gone off of the part?

Honestly i would not think the master link would wear any faster.

iv had it off before, this is something i know how to do.

Not that any of it really matters,,,

I dont knwo if the master link will fix it,

honestly its not worth going through either way as winter is starting to set it.

1/2 an inch and then you went tighter?! You ruined your chain. please spend a a buck on a service manual so you don't do this again when you buy a new chain.
