    Hi all:

Does anyone know of a maker of leather riding pants who makes sizes big enough for tall riders (I'm 6'4")? Nothing off the rack ever fits. I've tried Alpinestars, Dianese, Spidi, Frank Thomas, and others I can't recall right now, and they fit like highwaters. I'm thinking about ordering some custom-made pants from a small business called Spartan Leathers. Only $250 for a pair of pants. Wait time is 4-12 weeks, though! If any of you know a place where I can find some, without breaking the bank, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks.

I was going to suggest Squirrelman's use of a length of old sweatpants and a couple of bungee cords to strap on the extra material. A Better solution might be to check with Bates. Not a clue about pricing but they are on Signal Hill in Long Beach. Good stuff.

I've bought a few pair of leather pants from Leatherup.com out of CA and have been impressed with their prices, products and service. I'm actually waiting on a pair of leather overpants right now ($89 inc. shipping!) No, they are not Sidi or Dainese but they are of good quality (Exelement) and their prices are unbelievable.

Most of theirs come uncut so as long as the crotch to waist fits you then the pant leg length is not an issue. I don't even have them hemmed; I simply cut them to length and they don't fray. I would give them a call and see what they have for you; they stock a ton of styles, from cruiser to casual to track. Sounds like they must wear out pretty fast, unless they are being used for layering on those cold Maine days.

So if a person orders say a waist size of 32" what is the length of the inseam. Same question for a 50" waist. Seems to me like any shoeshop would be able to hem up a pair of leathers. They do here on the left coast.

    No,
I haven't had any wear issues; I bought a cruiser style back in the day, a recent pair of sport leather pants and I've ordered a pair of overpants for the ride to work. The different syles have different inseams; best to go to the site, choose a pair that you like and then refer to that specific style's drop-down fitment window. Also check out the previous buyer reviews for more fitment info. If you haven't been to their site you will be impressed.

    PS
I did take the first pair to a local tailor for hemming; he said don't waste your money. He measured them while I wore them, then just cut them to length, no charge. He said leather is so tough hemming is not functionally necessary. I wouldn't of thought so but they have been fine. The second pair I just cut to length myself.

...and all this time I figured you for a stylish guy. I'll bet Michael Jackson and Elvis had felled seams on thier leathers and I know for a fact that Mick Jagger does.

The tailor you consulted probably didn't want to try sewing leather on his sewing machine. A felled (flat) seam is fairly easy using a straight stitch machine. On fabric, the seam needs pressing. Again another thing the tailor did not wish to attempt because of wrinkling or puckering of the seam. Try a good shoe repair. Right machine and the right thread for leather.

I hope when the DIY cutting was done, the thread on the leg seams wasn't cut. Measure twice, cut once comes into play here IMO.

Do you or are you planning in future to buy some of those both sides open chaps that are on the website? A pair of those might be just the thing in Summer. I know that in San Francisco, they are almost mandatory wear at certain bike nights. I would guess some re-styling with shears is not out of the question on those.

Well, I went Madduxca's recommendation and bought some "tall" Alpinestars pants on Ebay. If they fit, I'll keep them. If not, I'll return them and get some custom pants from Spartan Leathers. We'll see what happens. Again, thanks for all the prompt responses.

Have you tried Icon Automag overpants? I'm 6'1" and I wear 33W34L jeans, the Icons in size 34 fit me well and are just a bit too long. Same deal as mentioned before, there is no hem on the legs, just trim to fit. I left them long and they bunch up on my boots.

    Jaimev34,
Sorry I missed this post earlier. Hopefully the A*'s will work for you. If not, I wear 36W 34L jeans and Joe Rocket Blaster pants fit me. They were a little less than $200 from newenough.com.
