5th generation vs. 6th generation

    im new to this forum but have been visiting for a couple years. i would like to know your thoughts on whether or not the 6th gen is worth giving up my clean 98. its well taken care of but has 25,000 miles and i know they can easily go to 100,000 but the value is also dropping. and at this time with the new 1200 coming out they have some incredible deals on the leftovers. im just not sure because i really enjoy mine and im afraid i may regret losing those gear driven cams for the v-tec stuff. i guess im like most of you i like getting into the sporting mode sometimes and at others just want to cruise. would love to own both of course but for now the wife is only gonna go for one streetbike. anyone else ever deal with this decision?

    Glad you decided to join up, taylor!

    While I own a 6th gen and love it, I'd say stick with your '98. I'm guessing it's paid for, it's cheaper to insure and you already know it's bulletproof and will last forever.

    From what I've read, the 6th gen is a bit more refined, but it's also heavier. I love the 6th gen's looks over the 5th, but would love to have gear-driven cams. The 5th gen seems sportier to me (tho I have yet to ride one) but the matching OEM bags on my 6th look and function great, and I use them often.

    Just my $0.02, but unless you're planning to add the hard bags, love the 6th gen's looks or you're just ready for a new bike, I'd keep the '98.

    It is all up to what YOU want. Hard for other folks to say one is better than the other. They are different bikes. If you want a change, it sounds like the 6th gen is the way to go...

    What you've described here is something the 6th gen was built for and is a part of the reasoning behind a VTEC. It's still early in the morning so I think this time I'll leave it at that.

    welcome Taylor, i've owned both Gen 5 and 6 (currently have a RWB 6th gen)

    and probably the best advice i can give you is to go blag a ride on a 6th gen if you can.

    if you like the experience then change, if your not that fussed-stick with what you've got.

    make sure the dollars stack up and that you can get a good deal and you will be happy.

    KEEP the 98...the value drop means nothing unless you sell ..so dont....98 is a classic

    Rode 5th and 6th back to back for a lot of miles on vacation and for me the VTEC didnt agree with me, plus the 6th was a bit heavier. The 6th did have better suspension. But I thought the 5th gen engine rocks, and I could mod the suspension to where I wanted it and for both bikes - linked brakes go in the dumpster. I bought a '98. Still dont care for the 6th. ----Keep the 98!

    Steve beat me to the punch. The '98 and '99 are true VFR classics.

    They are lighter, no catalytic garbage, larger exhaust manifold pipes, no Vtec,
    and as you well know, they sound like a Chevy V8 with a supercharger.

    Only negative that I have found (and lots of others) is the R/R issue.

    I've owned more than 40 bikes and my '98 is one of my all time favorites.

    Don't let these 6th generation guys push you around....they are just jealous. :tongue:

    I've been riding bikes for 20+ years and have owned everything from true sport bikes to dual sports and I find the VTEC to be very annoying and useless. If you think about getting a 6th Gen make sure to test ride it thoroughly on a variety of roads before making your final decision. As previously mentioned this topic has been known to cause great debate so let's switch to a less volatile subject like what the best oil is to use in the VFR :biggrin:

    As an owner of a 6th Gen which I love I would say keep the 5th. I have ridden both and prefer the 6th for my style of riding, but not by much. The VTEC is not really an issue in my mind. It is noticeable on the pre 2006 models but like everything has its good and bad points. While I prefer the 6th I don't think the difference between the two models is enough to change from a perfectly good 5th to a 6th. Now the 1200, that may be a different story all together.

    wow thanks for all the advice. just got done riding on my 98 and after reading this im not getting rid of it. especially liked the" value doesnt matter unless you sell it " comment. been thinking i will just add another bike to it maybe an 86 rwb or even a superhawk. have even been considering an rc 51 but dont know if my body could stand it. thanks again for all the advice it was really helpful

    Yet you own one, and still take every oppurtunity you can to bash on it. Useless? Would that be more or less useless than a person buying a product that they despise? In my twenty years of riding experience I find the 6th gen to be a terrific motorcycle and if there is fault in this situation, I would say that it is squarely on your shoulders, not the bikes. You have said in the past that you got a deal on it you couldn't refuse. So if the bike is that much of an issue for you than why don't you take the money you saved, use the advice that you've received on any of your numerous negative posts, and get a custom PCIII. Problem solved and you'll have a bike that you can stop pissing on. No bike is a perfect gem off the showroom floor, I would've thought that a lesson learned in your 20 years of riding.
