Here's my new-to-me '96 VFR with the seat cowl I just acquired:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

After ten years of piloting a cruiser and twelve years before that without a bike I'm still trying to get re-accustomed to riding/operating in the sportbike format ... ergos, controls, responsiveness, etc.
But it's coming back... was pretty weird when I went the other way too!

The extreme quiet of the stock exhaust was wiggin' me out , or adding to it.

HAD to do something about that!
Did a three part partial gut on the muffler.
I drilled the welds out holding the end cap onto the can to get access to the internals.

1st stage work... results, near diddly-squat!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s part two (see hole I sawed in the partition at the back end of the outlet pipe.) Made some improvement but not much:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s step three. Cut rear of inner canister out and removed wrapped baffle outlet pipe.
She barks some now, even closed up... more so with the end cap off as in this pic to show work:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

To close the can back up I rotated the end cap a few degrees from the drilled out welds, drilled & tapped and secured things with 3 stainless button heads.
I've used those fasteners on many mods over the years as they give a nice finished appearence... kinda' like high-end factory rivets.

I'm quite happy with the result, she sings pretty sweetly now... not overly loud, nice tonality.

Burbles along nicely trolling in traffic or doin' a gentle gallop up backroads.
Only lets out a bit of a rip if I twist it with resolve.

Further exhaust specs will need to wait until I'm squared away with my saddlebag situation. Bike came with GIVI monokey 21's but Im wanting to upsize to 36's.

First I need to figure how I'll re-fab the mounts... they're too high, to the rear and canted for my tastes.
Goin' to adjust that some, then see what needs doing to allow for proper clearence with whatever final exhaust system I put together.

Gonna' be busy over the winter! :faint:

Probably gonna' do a stage one re-jet and K&N at some point anyway since I plan on another pipe once I have the luggage situation straight.

    Maybe something along this line:
[IMG] Think that would look sweet peekin' out from under a sidebag!

    Curious...

You said you were going to rejet later - Did the "Pipe Cleaning" upset it enough to need it? The posts in the other exhaust mod thread said they didn't need to go to PC's for the FI, but curious as to how the carb'd versions respond ('97)

I'm tempted to do this this evening, but if I have to rejet I won't bother until I park it for the winter and do my longer list of keep-busy-stuff

No need for rejet with this mod so far as I can detect.
Spent much of today on the road with nary a hiccup, delay, etc.
Won't have many more days for riding til' spring... if any!

I have a more radical exhaust idea in mind and that would surely require intake work.

GO for it! I can still hear the music that played today!

Nice find there Woot!!! 99% of the time no jetting is require on any exhaust set up for the 4th gens, K&N and or your favorite air cleaner element helps as well as an un corked exhaust. but Honda did it pretty good as the factory has it a bit rich in the first place, so opening it up actually makes it so spot on that it's not worth the trouble to mess with the carbs, for what .2 of a HP or in throttle response. then if that's not enough the real carb kit you need ain't around any more, those Dyno jet kits will actually make it worse. proved by Dyno numbers and seat of the pants. Then to add to the V4 carbs being a RPITA. so it should be noted here, leave well enough alone.
All though if I had another set of carbs to mess with..... I did find an HRC trick that did squeeze a bit more, and the cool thing is theres no parts needed, but since it meant taking a good set of carbs apart to play with, I wasn't about to mess with the ones installed that worked. ;)

    Nice job on the mod.

^ notice I said your favorite, I know there's other out there that claim they are better. IMO it's more a case of what one got with what brand. I did a compro with the K-N I had all ready and was curoius with a stock one on a dyno, not a lot gain but the throttle response in the lower mid range was where it pick up the biggest amount of poop on my bike. No flame here, Poof!!

    I'm loving it already!
Seriously, if I could do a sound clip I would... "DUH!"
For a little work and no $$ it's a HUGE aesthetic plus.

    Thank you, I try!

Probably go K&N just because the idea of needing to buy a new one when it gets dirty irritates my sensibilities, on my bikes at least.

Good to know -- less work, less money... keep those in the bank for other
    mods.

THAT I'd like to hear about! Do tell... :ear:

Well, I'll have to go back to my notes to be exact, I recall something about a certain size drill bit being taken to a certain jet  Disclaimer; you didn't hear this from me.

    Makes the $3800 I paid in April '07 seem a bit much...

But it was worth every penny.

There is a guy here that has a 95 for $1200.

I like the way it looks, but I don't need another bike.

Just for ??? what kinda' mileage when you picked it up?

Mine was sub 19k, came with service manual, cover, Givi 21 bags and tail rack...
AND my brother copped a new pair of SIDI RR boots out of the deal as well. (Size 12, too BIG for me.)

It had 15,050 miles, and was pristine - not a scratch. It was also over two and a half years ago.

Included a cover, a Honda factory service manual, a cover, the seat cowl, brand new Dunlop Qualifiers, and an HJC helmet.

"Just the right one" after a year and a half searching for it.

    YESSIR, you did good!

I was looking for about a month.
Meant as a sporting alternative to my v-twin...

... it had to be a good value within budget as I was having a new roof installed on my house at the same time. :ballchain:

It came shod with nearly new Pirelli Diablos and the guy would've thrown in two helmets & a jacket (forget which xxx) but I'm pretty well set on that stuff although in fact, I did go on a small shopping spree for stuff:
Tank bag, matching jacket and helmet.

Also unfortunately came with a couple boo-boo's from the former owner's tipover at the end of his street:

[IMG] Gonna' have to erase those!
    Just more winter projects...

In the meantime while the weather co-operates I'm having a ball zipping around on this little missile "Yee-Ha!"
What a contrast to my other... like Porsche vs. John Deere.
