i just left the hole there, where the vacuum actuated solenoid was... i also pulled out the vacuum reservoir that was a little further down the line and plugged it up from there and glued the flap down just incase...
you're gonna love the intake sounds the bike makes with the snorkel and flapper gone, really mean!

with my bike the overall theme was:
all the noise and emissions regulations equipment that was on the bike was just dead weight. Honda will state excuses that this was for better fueling to promote higher intake velocity etc... but all these little quirks do is keep the vfr quiet at below 6000 rpms...
noise testing is done at exactly half the peak power rpms, say 11,000 x 1/2 = 5,500 rpms and under the bike needs to be under a certain noise decibel like say 95 db for instance...
also the fueling issues seem to fall right where testing would be done, at cruising speed, right in the middle. a little bit of the fueling can be fixed with o2 eliminators, but really it is in need of a power commander. after a good tune of the power commander the mid range really wakes up...

Ok guys, have just removed the snorkel and flapper. Now to take it for a test ride then off to work for a few days to see how it goes. Sunday I have a big ride on so I'm very interested to see the difference it makes.

Next is the 330 ohm resistors mod, might wait a couple of weeks for that one.

And the next thing I should mod is??????

I agree, make that already good looking ride even sexier with a fender eliminator. Also keep that 15 tooth (-1 from OEM) front sprocket at the top of your list. I just bought my second, this time a JT light steel sprocket for $18 from motostrano.com. It's a mod that will actually make a noticeable difference in performance.

Ok guys, I had my first ride today with the airbox mod's done. Well it's a big  it seems to have freed up the engine, it's smoother and has a nice little grrrrrrr happening  Only one small problem, at low speed and almost no throttle there is a small pop sound. I think it's the flapper going up then down again cause I didn't stick it down as yet, so I think it's just moving. Will glue ( only a small drop in case I have to reverse it) it down tonight and see how that goes.

And no I'm not going to mod the body work, I think it looks cool just the way it is  Also I'm looking for a db tinted screen at the moment. I have to check on local laws about fender eliminator as I'm not sure if we can do that here in OZ.

Thanks guys for your help so far

If I am correct then one you saw on EBAY is for 6th gens 02-09 and is the one you want. I believe the triangular looking model that Steven 113 is talking about is for 5th gens.

I could be mistaken, but the one I use looks like that "bracket" looking thing for $39 on ebay.

i agree that you should glue the flapper down. i used 5200 marine adhesive on mine, really serious stuff... but, i do not believe that will cure the popping sound that you are hearing... more than likely what you are hearing is just low speed hicups. kind of a little backfire blowing through the throttle bodies. i get them on my bike some times while the bike is warming up, though not so much after havine the power commander tuned... mainly you are just hearing them more then you used to due to the air box being open, and also because you have less intake velocity, can cause more hiccups...

Hey SJC. Another Aussie (Melbourne) and Im picking my new viffer up tomorrow so Ive been enjoying your timely thread.
Just by the by I have Keith Codes book Twist of the wrist and its a worthwhile read but perhaps more usefully:

:: Welcome to Super Bike School ::

we have the Superbike school here in Aus and they hold it at Phillip Island which alone could well be worth the price of admission. Ive toyed with doing the course myself for a couple of years but havent had a bike Id consider worth taking... until tomottow anyway.
Cheers and good luck with the mods.

(mental note to self: (1)remove snorkel (2) remove O2 sensors (3) change front sprocket down 1 tooth.................

+1 on twist of the wrist.
excellent book, i read it twice in just one week lol.
not all of it can be applied to the street, but the double counter steering is one of the most valuable techniques ive picked up so far...

Well it's been a couple of days now so what do I think.......
The bike feels heaps better, smoother with plenty of go and it's got a nice little grrrrrrrr going on. I'm still a little worried about the popping, and you were right CandyRedRC46 as it's not the flapper going up and down. Next I have to play with the O2 sensors and get a new -1 front sprocket.
Have just ordered a cheap db screen off of e-bay to see what it's like and I'm starting to think about a seat, maybe a corbin or sargent one. Not sure if we can get them down here in Oz though.

Plus a big thanks to CandyRedRC46 for your help so far, keep it up:biggrin:

dont sweat the popping, as long as it light popping not heavy. the only way youre getting rid of that is with a power commander.

No worries Leo, it's not a high end camera but it is a really nice one to operate. It's a Panasonic Lumix FZ28.
