I bought a 84 1000, the bike is in great shape, one problem, the fuel pump is dead. I checked OLDBIKE BARN, they are saying the pump is discontinued, any ideas, I really dont want to go to EBay for a used pump. Any help would be appreciated,
    thx

Some are running it with gravity only, with the filter removed. The last vf1000f I bought had a pump that I suspect was from a car. It was not OEM but was close.

I read somewhere about using a Honda Accord fuel pump, still searching for it, any ideas?

Just eliminate the pump altogether and the bike should be just fine as gravity fed. The only modification that would be required is altering of the petcock if it is vacuum activated.

I'm just curious; how do you know the pump is bad? Certian models have a relay that controls the pump so it doesn't run when the engine is not turning over.

The bike sat for a few years, the bike will run on full choke, and when I tested the relay it s was fine, I then hot wired the pump and its froze, I tried to run my 85 700 without a pump and the bike did not run very well with out it, I would like to replace the pump if possible,

If it sat for many years with fuel in carbs, it may be clogged idle jets. If you jump wired the pump in place, it would not run with carbs full.

If you gravity feed the bike you need to remove the fuel filter or replace it with something that allows more flow than a stock filter.

Good point. The pump would be "deadhead" and wouldn't pump if the float bowls and line were full of fuel already. If the pump was hotwired and the fuel line was run into a fuel can but still didn't move, then it's likely screwed.

My understanding is that the seat in the carb (needle/seat) were also a different size (opening) on models that didn't have a fuel pump to allow for better flow into the bowl. I'm not certain and I don't have a parts list in front of me.

I've got 100k miles and 25 years on my original pump. Don't be afraid of a used one if the price is right. If you go gravity, use a sintered filter.

The VF1000R has a very similar pump, the lines are just slightly larger so you would need to run an adapter in the fuel line to downsize them. Might be easier to find one of those pumps. You could probably substitute in a universal electric pump, check the auto parts stores.
