Is it safe to remove some foam in your helmet by the ear area? The head phone of my XBI is too thick and hurting my ears while riding. I am looking for solution. Any advise (Not a smart ass one) is greatly appreciated.

how do you expect toget any answers when you say no smart ass ones............

I would guess not but maybe you can check with the helmet MFG.... removing a one inch circle isnt gonna be life threatening .. but it could render any warranty on your helmet void....

    Ah Nuts,that's no fun Scubalong.

I agree with Crusty, removing a little bit of foam padding from the ear pockets in your helmet wouldn't be the end of the world :scubalong:. The way I understand it,it's actually the function of the helmet's shell and the styrofoam layer beneath it to primarily take the brunt of the damage and absorb the major portion of force exerted during an impact. The foam padding is supposed to be there more for rider comfort and as a last line of defense for your coconut. If the foam padding is pressing the headphones from your XBl so tightly to your ears that it's causing you pain, then by all means go ahead and remove a little bit of it. It's better than wearing no helmet at all right?

I have the same problem with mine. I have to twist the helmet back and forth a couple of times till the speakers are aligned with my ears. I was even thinking of getting a bigger helmet just for the XBI or my skull candy earpeices. (I commute sometimes up to 4 hours on the highway.)

I wear a HJC CL-SP helmet. I just took the cheek pads out, cut the stitching and sewed the speakers into the pad. You can't even tell they are there.

thats what I did as well also I didn't use the foam pads on the speakers. I placed the spekers between the factory foam and the helment. works great

    BTW I have a htc fs10

    J&M Headsets

I have a J&M dual rider set-up with the Elite Headsets installed in my Scorpion exo700. The directions for the J&M headsets requires that the foam be cuts out. I had the same set-up in a Scorpion exo400 when I crashed eight weeks ago. Beat the crap out of the helmet but no head injury (although I broke my collar bone, shoulder blade, top three ribs and sternum - all while wearing full gear head to toe).

I've been using Shoei helmets and J&M sets for many a year. The shock foam is two piece with the chin foam, including the ear areas, separate from the main (skull) foam so the headset mod doesn't compromise protection. All I do is remove the chin foam, cut the holes as needed, insert the headset and pop it all back together. It sounds and fits great!

Never and I mean never remove any of the EPS!! regardless of what the intercom company says you WILL ruin your helmet!! That "foam" is what adsorbs the force of an impact! Once you cut away at it or modify it you compromise the helmets safety. I have been selling helmets and intercom systems for some time (8 years..at least!) and refuse to believe that J&M's directions are worth following. It is possible to install a intercom without affecting the safety of the helmet. Are you willing to take a chance on safety just so you can hear your music? If it was just the foam padding, also known as comfort padding go for it, but do not modify the helmet in any way. There are many helmets out there that have large pockets to accommodate large speakers. If you are indeed using the ChatterBox products and a HJC helmet no modification required, they are designed to work together. ChatterBox has some of the smallest speakers, Much smaller than J&M's.

    I don't think

Divefr, I think it is better to cut a little foam out better then getting bigger helmet, The helmet should be snug fit to your head. My 2cents. I will try to cut out and post some progress.
