I have a 1986 VFR700F, on the underside of the gas tank there is three ports, 2 large ports and 1 small port on the front of the tank, the two large ports are tied together and then a single gas line is runs to the fuel pump, is this right or is the large port on the right side of the tank a tank vent or a reserve port. The manual I have does not show this in detail, thanks for the help in advance.

    California tanks

California tanks have three ports, small one in the front is tank vent, and is California only. The large one in the bottom rear left, as you sit on the bike, is to fuel pump, and the large one on the right is the over flow around the gas cap and vents to the ground.

Ditto, mine is a CA bike too. 1 in the front left going to the emissions, 2 in the back...1 for the fuel, 1 for vent.

California gas caps are not vented, if you install a Ca. cap on a 49 state tank it will pull a vacuum and and fail to run after a short period .

Mine is a California bike too (3 ports on the bottom of the fuel tank) and also has a canister at the front left of the bike. Is that a required item for the system to work properly? It doesn't show in my manual. What'll happen if I delete it from the system?

This is the emissions system. You definitely do not need this. Make sure you cap every port where the tubes from the system go onto the carbs or you will hear this little spitting of air every 15-20 seconds. I used rubber caps made to cover metal screws. Got them at Ace hardware.

I know this is an old thread but I have a relevant question. Which color port (see photo attached) goes to the fuel line and which one is a vent?

Green is fuel (it is right below the fuel valve)

Red is not a vent, it is a drain tube if you overfill the tank. Look under the cap and you'll see a hole.

If it was a California bike, there would be a vent spigot towards the front. On 49 state bikes the tank vents thru the cap key hole.

For the red overfill - my bike didn't have anythiny attached to this port. Should it have a tube or a cap?

Drain tube that runs down to the bracket in front of the rear brake pedal, with coolant overflow and battery vent tube.
