And an erudite fellow that Craigs List poster is too! Sounds like misplaced Harley envy to me. I will stick with my VFR and ride it till it has depreciated into give away value territory, thinking of all the enjoyment it gave me in the process.

I've never seen a group of people so deluded about the value of their bikes. Just because you think it's made of gold - and are told that by dealers and all your sheep buddies - doesn't make it so. And there is an absolute glut of used Harleys for sale out there, which just further devalues the bikes, except that most owners are still too pigheaded to understand the concept of supply and demand.

I actually have 3 theories of why Harley owners price their bikes so high:
    1. They spent so much money on HD bling for their bikes they think they should get every penny back.
    2. They can't afford their payments anymore (the famous $99 per month for the 1st 12 months, then the payment doubles or triples) but also can't afford to take a complete bath on selling their albatross, so they price it "optimistically".
    3. They don't really want to sell their bikes but their wives say they have to, so they list it for sale at an inflatged price, hoping against hope it won't actually sell.

One selling tip: Chrome-striped handgrips, a set of aftermarket mirrors and a sissy bar don't equal "custom Harley". Sorry.

If I could pick up say what should be a $12,000 Harley for maybe $1500-$2000 I might get it just for the hell of it. It would have to be an absolute sick ass deal though.

The proof is in the putting. Take a look at almost any used bike source. Mostly HD's.

That shit all got started with the slickers in Milwaukee coming up with the hype on not having enough bikes to satisfy the market about ten years ago. The harleydoods bought into that bigtime.

I guess this means that the deal between Disney and HD on building "Sturgisland" some where in LA is off the plate.

Yeah, me too for $2K. And it would have to be a completely chromed out abomination. Then I would ride the living crap out of it in all kinds of weather and NEVER wash or clean it, letting it rust and get all nasty looking like a rat bike. I would then be sure to stop at every HD dealer in my path and let it sit in the parking lot for all to see and become outraged over. And I would not wear any HD gear, just my normal full ATGATT. (I like to daydream.)

Don't be so harsh on the chubbies. Keep in mind, the bigger the cushion, the better the pushin'. (Or so they say - I wouldn't know. Although there was that one time I woke up in a strange bed on top of a... Oh, never mind. Wouldn't want to bore you.).
