So, I have misplaced the key to my 1985 interceptor. I called a cycle shop to see if they could pull my vin and make me up a new key, they were unhelpful, and told me the only way to get a new key was to pull the ignition and get a number off of the switch. Is this the only way? Is there a site I can go to to get the number? Can I possibly get away with not paying this dude to take my bike apart?

    Key code

All the locks have the code on them, I do not remember where it is on gen 1 but on gen 2 the helmet lock was hanging down and key code was easily read after metal tab was bent out of the way.

    No do not do that.
I used to work at a HONDA dealership and every bike was shipped wi FIVE keys. The dealer would only give the new owner 2 keys. they would keep e others so that they could sell them to the customer later. They also kept the can of touch up paint and other stuff. Pissed me off. i finally reported it to the state.(Long story)

You can get another key. Go to a good locksmith (not a hardware store) and they can help you. Another way is to ask a fellow owner of the same motorcycle to loan you a key to take to the locksmith so they know what the key kind of looks like. BTW I just bought a brand new ignition switch for a bike I am building for the VF1000F and I got it for $25.00 Plug and play.
That was ignition switch keys and it just plugs into the harness. It was from EMGO company.

    Hi

Where exactly did you buy the ignition switch? Ebay? Or an online retailer?

I am looking for a new one as the keys seem to able to pull out while the motor is running!!!

    Thanks

    Dave

No, but you can get a key cut from the number stamped on the ignition, gas cap or helmet lock, or the 'tool box' like you have on your 1000R. I don't know what year Honda stopped stamping the number on these parts but they definitely still were in '85. I had a locksmith in Elk Grove, CA cut me a new set of keys for the 1KR last year.

I had a little Mexican dude who works out of his van make me a key. He had blanks in a pile, pulled out some files.. stuck the blank in the ignition (which i'd removed from the bike), scratched the key, filed out some teeth and VOILA, I have a key that works both ignition and helmet lock. just look around for a decent locksmith, they like these sorta challenges lol

I worked in a HONDA dealership and the bikes come with 5 keys. The owner was only given TWO. The rest were saved by the dealer to sell to the customer when they lost both keys. BUT they did not tell the owner keys would be available, for obvious reasons.
Also the dealership i worked at would keep one of the mirrors (left side) and the can of touch up paint provided. They did not tell the customer.

    Yes I did quit.

you need more than the vin number such as the registration in your name (or title) and a valid drivers license, as well the address on the two need to match......this was told to me by a locksmith friend.. not sure of the vin number thing. but he would cut them from a blank by scratching the new one and cutting it from there...much like Pyros little guy in a van (down by the river)

A good locksmith that does motorcycle keys can fix ya right up. Just like anything else, If they gotta come to you it costs more. Also it's possible for a key to be cut without the code on the switch, it's just gonna cost you more moolah. The cheapest is to bring them the switch with the code on it. Sometimes it's easier to pull the whole top clamp with the switch on it than to remove the switch from the top clamp. On some models Honda uses locktighted breakaway fasteners that are difficult to remove.

Just for the record I've worked for the same Honda dealer for 23 years, and a different one for 2 years before that. Our bikes have always come with two keys and no touch up paint...always two mirrors though.

Huh, never heard of bikes being shipped with five keys + touch-up paint.

I used to work at a Honda dealer, who has since gone out of business. All our bikes came out of the shipping crate with two keys & no touch-up paint.

OTOH, this dealer "did" charge for work not performed, replace parts that didn't need replacement, and do only an oil change at each scheduled maintenace (but charge for all the factory recommended work). They've since gone out of business.

Used to be, that kind of thing was not unusual in bike garages...
