Well I'm about frustrated with my 85 VF500 interceptor. Everything started when I lost power and noticed blow back in the carps. Broken or stuck valve, I figured :(. So I took the bike apart and inspected the valves. I had 3 valves that lost the keepers and we're basically floating. The bike sounded like a lawnmower prior to loosing power. So figured Id do a half way build. to replace any damaged valve(s) and such.
So after finding parts (3 valves 4 rocker arms and 6 keepers) and wrapping my head around the VF500 repair book conflicting instruction on cam reinstall.
I went with lobe orientation as descried on this site.
I started the bike it was way quiet, I was sooo happy. But after a short test drive, dam lawn mower sound came back. I lost some power too. better than before, but not like the first run after rebuild( prior to lawnmower sound returning)
So I re looked at the valves, and clearance, made sure they still have keepers. Re checked valve clearances,Some were off a bit. Started it back up. dam thing still sounds like a lawnmower. Im lost at this point.
Ordered a carb sync tool, so hopefully balancing the carbs will help the noise?

    Welcome aboard.
The carbs seem to be the most common issue with the older bikes. There are probably hundreds of threads about various carb issues. Good luck with the timing.

^ awe shit, he's at it again... Actually he's asking about a real problem, so until he becomes a smart ass to his problem, we as members should tread lightly till one knows that he will get the just of the joke.
    Okay enough of that subject.

Like so many it's really hard to pin it down over the inter-net, but, and this is my opinion, those first gen V4 all sounded like a lawn mowers to me, due in part to the 360 crank firing, but I could be way off in this as you say it sounded better, but then maybe it was the better sound that was wrong? just throwing it out there to think about. also another thing in it sounding not right is one cylinder isn't firing bad plugs or? just something to add to the mix, sounds like you know more about it than us. but we're all good to hear how it's going and give out advise as we can, ya never know someone else could have this very problem..

    LOL nice lawn joke
Well the next day it was quieter, and wasn't over heating. basically i think all i heard was the timing chain. But as I was riding home, Saturday night the bike made a small pop and i started loosing power. Arg pushed it back to work some odd 10 miles. thank god 500's are light. Next day dug into the bike. checked all my plugs for oil. showed a lean burn. so I disconnected the fuel line from the carbs. no gas Hmmm. the went back to b4 the filter started the bike. again no fuel. I eventually found out the fuel stopped at the pump. After the pump , there was fuel flow from the tank. I checked the relay and as a double measure pulled it off a same year part bike I bought a few weeks back( too bad it didn't have it pump). still no pump action.
I do see threads about omitting the pump completely. I will try this when i go to work tomorrow. Arg i will be so pissed if it works. I should have check VFWorld on my G1 and saved myself the 10 mile hike.
    Thanks for the tips
I tried to post a pic but there's an upload error. Ill figure it out.
