Those of you who have changed a headlight...

Is there a trick to disconnecting the wire harness? I understand the process of changing the bulb, but I cannot get the plug off of the bulb. Is there a latch or something I am not seeing?

 yup, there's an annoying latch that you gotta push in to pull out. Best way to do this is to get a flashlight shine it on the attachment and look for what looks like coat hanger wire. That's the latch keeping the light bulb in. If you push it in and (I think) push it another direction it'll unlock.

And where might this latch be located?

That's why I suggested flashlight ;-) it's literally right on the base of the bulb but because it's such a tight cramped space its hard to see where it is.

Just a wiggle and tug for the wiring connector. After you get that off with the dust cover you can see the retainer clip. Pivots on one side and hooks on the other.

OK, I thought so, but I have tugged quite forcibly on the plug and it will not let loose. I guess it won't hurt anything if the bulb breaks(it's already dead) but I do not want to damage the plug.

Drewl, It on the right side. You just have to feel with ur finger and give it a push in and move down out of the way and voila............Don't pull on the wire you will regret.

OK, seriously. I cannot get that stupid plug off the bulb. The rest of the process is pretty straight forward, but the frggin plug will not budge.

Just remove the front upper cowl so you can see whats going on. Then you can use a very small flat head screw driver to help pry that safety latch loose. I am assuming that you are trying to replace the headlight bulbs without removing the cowl...a.k.a. the hard way.

I recently had to change a dead bulb, and it was tough to get the plug off the back of the bulb. After enough wriggling in all directions along with pulling, it eventually came loose.

    OK, Britt. Thanks.
Yeah, I am trying to do this without moving any fairings. I am at work so I would rather not take the front off.

Thanks for the pimping offer, Long.

I always have two problems...the plug and the metal clip. The plug harness does have a little latch on it. Mine were extremely difficult to get off even though I know I had the latch pressed in far enough.

The metal clip that holds the buld in is usually very easy to unhook and slide out of the way to replace the bulb itself, but I struggle to get it back on. I will try for 10-15 minutes with absolutely no luck, and then on the 50th try, it just clips right back into place without any issues and I still have no idea what I did differently on the 50th try.

The first time I changed them, I had the fairings off (had to change instrument cluster bulbs also) and it was very easy to see what was happening.

This episode is one of my big gripes with motorcycle designers.

Some engineers don't have a clue about proper engineering for maintenance.

As a retired Human Factors Engineer (military stuff) I find lots of design mistakes in this area.

Just look at the crappy plastic thingys that hold our fairing sections together.

They are junk and break easily. My RC30 had proper dzus fasteners, which are

far easier to use. Ask any mechanic and they will tell you about lots of

maintenance items that could be improved.

I would like to take the engineer that designed the upper cowl and make him

change the bulb. That's how we did it on defense hardware.

    Carry On ~

I'd like to get my hands on one and choke him to death. If you think that is bad... refer to changing the thermostat. Much worse than this.
