OK, so here's what happened... I have an '05 red (the faster color)6th gen that I ride almost every day for commuting (70 miles roundtrip). Bought the bike almost a year ago with 2K miles on it. It now has 11.5K miles. I'm no wrench monkey, but I can change the oil myself, and I can read the service manual. Anyway, on my way home from work yesterday, in 100 degree heat by the way, I looked down at the speedo and .... nothing, blank screen, tach reads 0, and the fuel gage is gone. Clock still works and bike runs and starts like a champ. Also lost all the lights, headlights, tailights, dash lights and indicators. What the heck happened?? The only fuses I can find are under the seat and they are both intact (two @ 30 amps). What the heck do I check next? Should I just take it to the dealer or what?? I need to replace the coolant, brake and clutch fluids and air cleaner anyway right?? Any help here would be great.

Yes, the guy I bought it from was a straight as an arrow detective and he told me that he had that recall preformed. I took the right side fairing off last night and looked around a bit, saw like 4 wire harnesses all covered with clear rubber boots and they all looked fine, no signs of wear or rubbing or discoloration. Are there some fuses I can check somewhere? I have to get this fixed B4 Longs BBQ...

The fusebox you are looking for is up underneath the meter panel..depending on ABS or not determines which meter panel it is under and I can't remember which is which but I think non-ABS is located on the right side.

You will probably find that all but one of the fuses are blown, maybe even all of them. More than likely you have a short on a common ground somewhere along the line since you lost everything. Of course you could have also experienced an issue with the R/R here as well.

You've got the skills for all of this. Do it yourself and save yourself some money.

ck connections at gauge panel and R/R connections to see if any are melted.
if not you need to look for loose grounds, start at battery and go from there

Chuck - Do you have Helibars installed? I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM about 2 months ago. Lost everything except the clock. Turns out the turn signal wires got pinched when I had the Helis installed and it eventually wore through the wire coating and...bzzzzt! Short city. It's worth checking.

As a matter of fact, I do have heli-bars installed. The bike had them on it when I bought her. I was actually thinking about putting the factory ones back on, just been lazy about it. I'll have to checkout those wires when I get home tonight. One other thing that's weird, when I press the turn indicator switch, it shows the flashing direction indicator on the dash... Anyway, thanks for the tips, I'll be looking at her again tonight.

    Thanks

Thanks to everyone, you know who you are, for all the help and suggestions. I figured out what was causing the problem and why the fuse blew. All that stuff was on only one fuse. Anyway, I will be repairing the damaged LED plate bolt (must have been hit by a rock or something thrown up by the tire) and all should be well by next week. Thanks again to everyone for your encouragement and support. This truly is the best bunch of people anywhere! VFR riders friggin ROCK!!
