Im not sure how the previous owner did this, but I bought the bike with a gear slip between 3rd and 4th. What made the symptom unique was the fact that it would shift back and fourth, ON ITS OWN, between 3 and 4. Its only worn on one side of the fork.

The repair requires you split the case.

Gear dogs must have been worn, forcing the gear againt the fork on acceleration.

Do you replace the forks or the dogs, or both?

Where can I get parts for a vf 1000 with the same problem?

    Thanks,

    Dave

The damage to the shift forks shown in the pictures is pretty typical for a bad gearbox. In my experiences, this is almost always accompanied by damage to the gear dogs. It's also typical to have damage to the shift drum as well.

No, you can't do it by hand. It takes a precision machine shop with special tooling to perform an undercut modification to the gear dogs.

As noted above, you should plan on replacing the affected gears (maybe others too), the shift fork(s), and the shift drum.

Unfortunately, the parts for the VF1000 are no longer available. I've been working on a fix for the shift drum but it isn't ready yet. Depending on the damage done to them I might have figured out a way to straighten the shift forks. An undercut service to the gears is the hot ticket to fix those parts.
