I know you are trying to help, but come on. I think that it is common sense that deer are more active at dawn and dusk. Even a 5 year old knows this. However, deer do not set their watches and say "hey earl, we can't go out yet" " why bob?" " well, ya see, we are only allowed during the hours of 8pm to 7am, that is the agreement we have with the bikers" :lol:

Point is, deer are always out, and are always going to be unpredictable. Time and proximity to hunting season, is also another time that deer are lots more active than usual.

 

Sad part here is I see them out and about a lot, don't take it to serous as to what if now, I say that Yes now stay the line, sheesh.nothing like learning after the fact like squirrels crossing and any other animal they seem to get weird once on the road and don't have clue what to do next that in it's self is the problem there's never any consistent move they make. "IF" I had to do it over i'd stay on track maybe add a bit more brake but thn whats a.005 reaction brake time going to do? thanks guys for all the support here. it really does help. Yes gear up even if it's to the local beer store. and make sure it works too. zip this pants up to the jacket. crazy how it can go south just when you think it's ok.

 

Ron brings up a good point, jacket was a Cortech with armor in all the right places, thing is the shoulder pads are a bit small, after the fact. There's room to make them bigger for more coverage. Fore arm pads, seem bulky when just wearing it around but once on the bike they work, man these saved a lot of extra trouble for me, again most of my rash came from the jacket being lifted during the tumble. I can actually say had the jacket been able to stay put, I wouldn't have had all the rash I got. Yes the road, fresh 3 week old chip seal torn this up big time, pretty sure leather in this case wouldn't have done much better.
Gloves , this is another big one, folks go to the trouble and get the best for the money and that they fit. armor in the knuckles is a must, that and even if it's hot get some with some sort of gauntlet. mine were Fox light weight summer gloves with rubber backing on the fingers leather palms textile back , also they where of the short design as to not get in the way of the jackets cuffs, once I was air born this made the wrist area exposed to some abrasion. which I got, Funny thing here is since I didn't slide the palms where not touched, when I bought these gloves I concerted that to be of the most concern.. now when you tumble a whole other thing happens. DOH!! they didn't last long at all, the chip seal just ate them up.





Dudes also get the best you can get in the way of a helmet too, even though mine was pretty, it was top notch it saved my life. next trick is to get another one i like, speaking of ......

 

Don't know if this will help but I did have a close call with a deer not too long ago. (Just ask GeorgiaRider about that!) If I powered through I would've hit him because he was just sitting on the road just relaxing. And I came through a tight curve and by the time I saw the deer I slammed the brakes and what really surprised me about the deer was that he didn't just instantly bolt. It was more like a delayed stoner reaction, "uh.. whoaa...... dude.... that biker's getting really close man.... oh sh*t!! I guess I better get up and move..."

As a matter of fact even after I braked the deer still didn't move... I inched up towards the deer and revved up the engine a little to scare him. THEN he finally got the hint.

What works for me is I never ride at 100% capacity and always leave room for error because those are public roads. Some of the people I ride with are surprised to hear I've never actually dragged my knee considering how fast I ride and how much I hang off the bike. Dragging knees and riding at 100% should only be reserved for the track because that is a controlled environment not to mention there's an ambulance/emergency team on standby.

Still, I have to say it's very good that RVFR is analyzing and thinking of how he could've done things better. Stupid people repeat mistakes, smart people don't repeat mistakes and geniuses learn from stupid people's mistakes.

Its not common sense for all. Neither is riding with the best protective gear. Reminders like this while they may suck for our friend, are daman good lessons for us all.

Holy coincidence batman, that just happened last weekend when I rode up cherohala skyway. The driver had to be escorted by ambulance, is there some kind of tree-falling season we need to know about?

 

Gotta say, that jacket may not be the best for riding anymore but it sure does look cool, especially with all the tears. Too bad you were in it when you made it look cooler... :wink:

Glad you are here to tell the story. Hope you are back 100% soon and riding a shiny v4 no matter the generation. I saw a deer cross a road here about a month ago in the middle of day. It was running down a gas pipe line. Need to call open season on deer, thin out the population.

 

The deer are out 24/7 around here, more prevalent at dusk and dawn, but I see them all day long. They graze alongside the PA Turnpike, along the roads in Valley Forge State Park, and walk through our neighborhood like they own it. I'm more wary at dusk and dawn, but you need to be prepared all the time around here. I think someone forgot to tell them they are supposed to be nocturnal.

 

Maybe the deer are pushing them over so it will be safe to cross the road. :biggrin:

 

This has nothing to do with RVFR. He wore gear, did nothing wrong, and I hope that he heals fast. The whole thing is a sad ordeal. I wasn't talking about protective riding gear, my point was that deer are out all of the time. It does not matter what time the accident happened. Deer/moose/antelope/sasquatch, etc, don't work 9 to 5 jobs. Now go hug your mama if you can see thru the tears...TOOL.

Heal up Jay. I hope you find another sweet 4th gen like you had.

 

Thanks for sharing your experience - I glad you are able to tell us about it. As of today, my jacket will be attached to my pants. This was the first time I was given a good reason to attach them.

deer aren't always out..... just like all the other critters that run around...ifthe accident happened at a NORMAL time deer are out then its a no brainer..... and no its not common sense about deer, Some people never have to deal with the bastards.....when does hunting season start...I do know and have seen, that they will move closer to housing developments a few weeks before hunting season starts......maybe this was a factor......the more info people have the better they feel....thats human nature analyze, rethink, analyze some more, rethink. its a never ending cycle.... so no need to get pissy at each other......

Agreed. Two toned little bastards. One got me a few years back whilst riding a bicycle at 03:30. Insurance lady pissed herself when I made a claim for loss of clothing($400.00 worth) but they paid it.
