On my 86 vf500 interceptor a valve destroyed the 3rd piston so I am in need of a new engine. If I can't find another engine from a 86 vf500, is there any other engines I could fit onto the bike without doing any major modifications?

no need to fight me for that motor because I messaged the guy and he told me that the engine has been sitting for at least a couple years. so most likely it'll do the same thing that my engine did.

Why don't you REPAIR the engine you have?
    Then the serial numbers match.
Also you have to take it out to get another engine so you might as well just repair it.
Put some new rings in it and some cam chains while you are at it.

If you decide to repair or rebuild, make sure you can locate all of the necessary parts BEFORE you do! I'm having troubles locating head gaskets. One of them is available, the other is not. I'll have to do more research to see if anyone else has them, but so far, I've not found any.

some Magna gaskets could be the same.

Also you CAN re use a head gasket.
It was not uncommon to re use a head gasket. Do a careful visual inspection and spray both sides with copper gasket sealer.

I used to work at a HONDA dealership and there were like 40 bikes sitting around not getting fixed because they were waiting for parts. The parts man did not know that many parts were interchangable.
It is the expert mechanic that can tell you because they can do precision measuring of the part. With the help of two other mechanics we got all of those bikes repaired and back to the owners.

Sometimes you will see a part like a clutch bushing that has spiral grooves
for oiling and other times it has many holes drilled. It is just that the manufacturer will change methods if they find out one method is less expensive or takes less time. So an EARLIER or LATER model may work for you.

But like I said a USED head gasket WILL work. If it was a top fuel dragster then it wouldn't work. But a street bike-no problem.
Just inspect he gasket and make sure to spray it with copper gasket spray.

If you are doing a restoration you can make a head gasket from copper or even modify a head gasket.

I totally understand the variations in manufacturing, having been in manufacturing at my old job, and now in automotive repair.

I would try re-using the head gaskets only if they were MLS. Unfortunately, these are not, therefore when everything is cleaned up, they will not fit back together properly. If I was only worried about sealing the compression in, used gaskets would definately work.

I have been talking with people about making my own.

This is super common with the 500's. As mentioned, it's possible to repair the engine so that's probably going to be your best option.

There's no such thing as that with motorcycles! The serial number has no correlation with the VIN number and there is no way to tell if an engine is the original one or not.

The cam chains are WAY strong on the VF500's, so don't bother changing those. The tensioners on the other hand.....

Exactly, without a way to verify the miles I would hesitate to buy any used motor...
