the stock filter and the bmc filter are the same size. it is just the kn filter that is smaller.
that is why i chose the bmc over the kn. i just couldnt see how reducing the filtering area could possibly be a good thing.

Has anyone ever dynoed back to back with stock air filter and a K&N unit to see if there were any gains?

I was looking for a BMC filter for the so called bigger filter media area but then i just found this:

    http://vfrworld.com/forums/fifth-ge...-air-filter-vs-stock-picture-comparision.html

Appearantly they are near equal in media sq area so there really wont be any difference between either brand....i found a K&N's for $35 or BMC for $68.... i guess K&N for me.

    BMC- 47.43 sq inches
    K&N- 47.25 sq Inches

If you read actual tests, filters like the K&N will allow larger particles through it which really surprised me because I figured the oil would catch them. I think that the tests said the foam filters were better if oiled properly. That could be why dirt bikes use foam filters.

On the same vein though, I have had a K&N on my '2000 Impala for 110,000mi. and it still doesn't use any oil (well maybe just a little in the 7,000mi. change interval).

If you don't look at it is performance enhancement but the fact that the paper filter cost the same and this is a reusable filter. Then it is worth the money. It will allow your bike to breath better or at minimum as well.
I have seen the newer K&Ns that have reduced media surface area that match the flow of paper OEM filters. My filter is almost all filter media.

It's to be expected, any performance filter will sacrifice some filtering capabilty in exchange for higher flow. Nearly everthing performance does... Same thing with performance tires too. I wanted to put one on my viffer because it's not a ram air bike like my gixxer. Ram air bikes way more garbage and dirt on the filter the snorkel ones. My gixxer I left it with a stock filter because I did not want to sacrifice filtering for a tiny gain (oem one is a high flowing dry cotton unit anyways).

Well water doesn't easily get it, it goes through various paths and the ducts have water drainage holes on the bottom and since water is heavier then air, most if not all gets drained before it does any harm. On my gixxer, the SRAD design of the air intake, i refuse to use aftermarket filters simply because of the amount of dirt and trash that gets directed in i dont want to lose any filtering efficiency. I dont know why Honda doesnt use the high filtering, high flow dry cotton based air filters like the Suzuki bikes.... my Toyota 4Runner uses the same type of filter too....very high quality.

how the hell do you guys get over 200 miles on a tank? I used up 4.9 gallons in 135 miles.

I just got 44.7 mpg. For the most part I kept the rpms below the 6500 mark, so the other two cylinders wouldn't kick in. Of course I did buy the VFR for a reason, so I did let it loose a few times. Practiced a couple 0-60 starts, took it up to 130mph on the highway this morning when traffic was light. Did some quick passes coming home from work last night. noticed that if I start out at about 60 to 65 following about 1.5 sec back, I can be at 100 by the time I reach the front of the car! That's downshifting to 4th. All in all just take it easy most of the time and you should get good mileage.

What do you the other 2 cylinders? Dont you mean other 8 valves because of Vtec? As far as i know all 4cyl fire at all the time regardless of rpms.

installed a K&N on my 06 tonight...wondering if anyone else noticed the damn top of the air box sitting ~8mm above the bottom box after sticking their K&N in? another thing I thought was weird is the thicker part of the filter fits down where the stock filter had the thicker part facing up... any idea why K&N would fit the filter that way?

edit...I guess I forgot to remove the stock air filter gasket? I didn't see anything in there...going to lift the tank back off now...

I think K&N has accountants write their instructions....There's a HUGE fucking difference between an O-ring and a gasket. Their instructions say "remove o-ring from filter box lid and filter box"
    um...there's no o-rings there.

    whatev.
    Its installed properly now :)
Not really expecting improved performance or anything...maybe a couple MPG. My biggest reason for getting the K&N is that I can wash it. It was $10 more than a stock filter...even if I wash it twice and decide to go to something else, I still saved money over buying stock filters every time.

I would only make the exception of a K&N on this bike in particular for 2 reasons, 1) its not ram air or direct cold air induction which keeps outside dust and garbage off to a minimum since the K&N filtering capability is less then perfect. My Suzi filter for example gets dirty fast because of the SRAD ram air intake and would suffer filtering wise since its easily affected by outside dust, dirt and overall freeway garbage. 2) The OEM Honda filter is way too pricy for a paper filter to keep throwing away each time.

OMG, I cam here looking for why my new K&N on my 07 seemed to have a larger gap between the top & bottom airbox, I did not see any " o-rings " either
Guess I will be taking my tank off again also to remove a gasket...Haha
