Well just got myself an 85 VF500. 1900 miles. It needs some work mainly the carbs and I need some advice and help.

It has been sitting a long time so it needs fluids changed like oil, coolant, brake etc.. That is not the main issue though, it idles high and rough, pretty sure there is gunk in the carb so it needs taking apart and cleaning. I have done that before and I know its a pain in the... to put them back together and get them synced.

Long story short I need a good repair manual. Any suggestions? Thanks guys.

Also another problem is that the chain makes this clicky click then it spins. What could that be?

A good shop manual is Clymers or Haines.

After getting the shop manual and reading the section on carbs. Take the carbs out and clean them good the clymer manual is what we use and it has been very helpful in getting my 500 up and running again (carb and gas feeding issues). Make sure to check the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump as well after cleaning the carbs and putting them back in the bike.

If your not comfortable with syncing the carbs i'd find a "carb guy" who might be willing to give you a hand at doing this. The adjustment screws can be a pain in the tush to get to.

Hope this information helps. Good luck!!!:thumbsup:

On the chain issue. I would get a new chain and sproket, if the bike sat for a long period of time i wouldn't trust the old one very far.

Thanks for the info, I received Clymer's in the mail yesterday and today I took the carbs off. I took apart #2 and aside from a thin coat of brown dusty residue in the bottom of the float bowl everything was clear. I think it might be some rust residue from the tank (the gas in the fuel line was brownish).

I didn't get a chance to buy one of those 1 gallon carb cleaner buckets (my local hardware store didn't have any).

Do you think it's worth taking apart the other ones and dunking the jets in carb cleaner for a while? I'm afraid that I after I put them back together the bike will run even worse.

You probably don't need that stuff.

Just remove and clean the jets, spray holes with carb cleaner, spray and blow out with compressed air.....

if you need special carb magic....PM me for more info.
