Why would the PO drill a bunch of holes in the top of the air box?? It's an 87 700. More air but why?

Modding airbox suggests that a jetkit was installed as stage3 dynojet package recommends altering airbox.

Cuz it runs better than if he drilled holes in the ECU.

    Dyno crap

I have dicked with jet kits in gen 2 for twenty plus years and I would suggest a new air box and toss the Dynojet neddles for stock.Sounds like I am being a butthead but they run much better with the airbox unswiss cheesed and the taper on the needles is too aggressive. There is very little to be gained and most I have run into were doing no justice to the bike and when removed the owner was much happier. You can do mods to the carbs but they work best with stock parts.

the PO might have just equated more noise with more power, or he could have just liked the extra sound.

    how is it running?

    purgatory.........................................
the holes allow for more volume since its old style not truely pressurized through ram air..you can just tape outside the airbox instead of buying a new one but..............if it has the jetkit then it will run rich..the air box helped to not cuase turbulence like with the k@n individual filters had trouble with that but anyhoo just clean your filter regularly and if its running good leave it alone rejet is pain in azz
