Hi everybody, I am in some serious need of help or ideas. I just had the carbs completely serviced and synced on my bike. They look wonderful. I have changed out the plug wires and caps with new ones. The bike ran before all of this was done, although not very well. The battery may be finished, I am not sure. I have completely drained the fuel and replaced it with fresh gas. The bike now does not start but lets out extremely ear splitting backfires. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

How long since the bike last ran ??

Prime carbs by filling them with fuel b4 attempting to start.

Let fuel sit in carbs for awhile.

Use a small amount of starting fluid (brake or carb cleaner work too) sprayed at air intake hole to get it running, and engine vacum will pull fuel into small passages inside carb that may still be dry after rebuild or sitting too long.

Also, check battery voltage and charge it if too low.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
The bike has not been running for about a month.
I am assuming when you say spray cleaner in the intake holes you mean take the air box off and spray inside the rubber boots of the air intake plenum? If this is correct, please let me know. I have checked everything else on the bike but it is still giving me no love. Also, Maybe you can let me know if I have hooked the new plug wires up correctly to the ignition coils. The way I have it hooked up is as follows: If you are sitting on the bike and looking down at the ignition coils from left to right. Left side coil I have from left to right cylinders 1 & 3. Right side coil I have from left to right cylinders 2 & 4. I have a feeling that the problem may be something small with the carbs.
    Thanks again,

just spray into the airbox, no need for further disassembly.....

i've no clue about your coil/wire question but any mistake there will prevent running. Honda uses the very highest quality sparkplug wires, and i doubt yours needed replacement unless you saw cracks or evidence of rodent nibbles.

first off be very carefull spraying any kinda flammble solvent into airbox. have an extinguisher at the ready i about caught my bike on fire doing tyhis very same thing. and as far as coils go if standing at the back of the bike looking forward the left side runs the rear head and i believe left wire runs to the left cylinder and right wire to the right. and the right runs to the front head with this one i also believe the left one goes to the left cylinder and the right to the right . call your local honda dealer and speak to their service dept and ask them for your firing order

also make sure your fuel line is connected to the right spot... as funny as this sounds it is probably done more than you think...

one other thing.... I know the carb boots on my 86 have to go on a specific direction... you might check that ....
