    Hi!

I tried my friend's bike yesterday and noticed a strange noise.

When I pull off in 1st gear and let me slow down with the hand on the clutch, the bike makes a gear noise similar to a car manual transmission in reverse. It does that only in 1st. Sound is pretty loud.

    Bike has 1400 miles.

Don't know if this is normal for this model but my 2000 doesn't do that.

    1,400 miles or 14,000 miles ???
1st gear is kinda low on 6th gen
my 02 doesnt make any noise ( 19,000 miles ) but w/ only 1,400 on it I would say it will go away once you have some miles on the bike.
Things still kinda tight in there. have you changed the oil yet? I recomend changing it at least twice buy 1,500 with a NON SYNTHETIC oil to flush all the metal from engine break in.

Really 1400 miles. The bike is new! He have had a f*cking deal on it...

Yeah, I know the 1st gear is pretty low but the noise happens whan the clutch is depressed so the bike is not compressing at all, just going by itself!

Oil/coolant have been changer before he got it. I bet synthetic oil has been used... Maybe it's too early for this!

The bike is still guaranteed si I'll tell him to to go to the dealer with it!

Mine is an '04, but it has an '06 engine/gearbox with 2000 miles and it also whines in first gear. Mine has Honda GN4 oil in it. I think of it as a first gear indicator.

I've noticed various clatters and whines associated with the clutch at low speeds on my 07...I consider it normal.

Normal. My 04 whines with both the Honda GN4 or Motul 300V full synthetic. Sounds the same with both oils too... so it really is just gear whine, nothing more.
