    Hello,

I currently own a 200000 5th gen and I love it. A friend just bought a 6th gen (2006) with 1400 miles on it and let me try it around the block. So I had the chance to tried them "back to back" and notices that his 6th gen is less powerfull at low RPM ranges. Twisting the handle in 1st gear is so easy on his bike compared to mine. My impression is that the 6th gen is a more touring oriented bike than the 5th gen.

    Both gearing are stock.

I really liked his bike as it's smoother than mine but to me, I don't know how to explain, seemed like something was missing. Is it the VTEC that does this impression to me?

I looked at the specs and noticed that his bike has more torque than mine so, in theory, should be faster to get out of the box but i'm feeling it's not.

Did you had the chance to try both bikes and what are your impressions.

I've ridden both generations and I own a 5th gen myself. I do agree that the 6th gen is smoother and I think it's more suitable for cross-country tours. When I rode a 6th gen I almost felt like I was gliding and made my bike look like a harley.

With the difference in acceleration the main difference is the power delivery at RPMs. On the 6th gen most of the power is above 7K rpm and below that it's kind of wimpy. But on the 5th gen there's more power on tap below 7K rpm.

That said, I'd rather stick with my bike because I like the power on tap not to mention it's a lighter bike making it more nimble. Although I have to say the suspension isn't fantastic and I have to crank it to the max to get really good handling from it.

I have both a 4th and a 6th Gen; the 4th is lighter plus it does seem to rev more freely. It could partially be due to the 2 Brothers exhaust (lighter than stock and more free-flowing) but I think the biggest difference is that the 4th gen has 26K on it versus 8K on the 6th Gen. Everything has broken in on the '96 while my '04 is still tight; the '96 shifts smoother, the clutch feels buttery smooth, etc.

Honda builds to such exacting specs that they seem to take longer than most makes to fully break in. Just my opinion.

    Joe

Keep in mind that the 5th gen has a 17 tooth front sprocket unless someone has changed it. The others have a 16 tooth front sprocket.

I am changing mine to a 16 or a 15 tooth when it comes time for a chain replacement.

You mean that differences between generation are very sentisitive to some users? My goal isn't to start a war here, I was just giving my impressions as a newbie!

I'm new to motorcycles so I can only rely on my 300 miles riden on my VFR (2000) to make some comments. But to me, it was very obvious.

In fact, I don't care about generations. I personnaly own a 93 civic, a 93 Del Sol and a 99 civic. Each of them have their good and bad sides. I mean that a generation cannot be better that another in my opinion. They are just different.

If a rider prefers a certain characteristic, he should buy the bike that will satisfy his needs, regardless of the generation!

    Peace!

Now you know why I am selling my 6th Gen and hoping to buy a 5th Gen in the next year. Plus I want to be just like Joey Dude.

    Regards,

So if the front sprocket is bigger, the bike should have less acceleration. That's exactly what's NOT happening...

Wouldn't the difference be the VTEC on the 6th gen model and how it behaves at lower rpms?

:pop2: and just in case this thread becomes a tiger tiger thread.....

I think it would be easier to just have a 5th Gen and a 6th Gen...

The 5th vs 6th discussion has been stirred up in many threads. I'm just gonna be nice and say even though the specs are close, its strange how both bikes have different personalitys. - I liked the 5th better.

    Peace

yes having a 6th gen will make you appreciate the 5th gen even more like having a yugo next to a ferrari.
