    Hi,

The starter switch on my recently purchased '96 will intermittently do the "I'm spinning but nobody's cranking" deal. Usually works fine the first attempt at starting but occasionally it will take 2-3 stabs at the starter switch before engine cranking occurs. Is the starter clutch a common culprit on the 4th gens? I checked Battery and Starter motor (both seem fine). Any time-saving advice would be appreciated. By the way, mileage is 26,000. Thanks.

    Joe

I ordered the gasket from thr local dealer and should arrive by Thursday; I'm hoping that I get lucky and it's just the outer clutch bolts having loosened up over time. If so, I'll have the fresh gasket on hand to button it back up. If not, then I'll order the needed parts online instead of the local dealer and save some money.

I recently bought this bike as a change of pace bike from my '04 but I'm enjoying it so much that I've been dragging my feet on addressing the starter clutch issue. I will this week, though, and post my findings. Thanks.

    My starter clutch issues: Resolved

    I had the same issue.

I pulled mine apart, but found no cracks.

I replaced starter clutch springs (stock replacements, $2.50/each)

    Works great now.

More info and link to Honda Magna starter clutch page found HERE

Here a service manual link, in case you don't have one. Pdf is about 1/3 way down the page.

    Good luck

By the way, did you need to wedge anything between the gears while you tightened or loosened the clutch bolts? Thanks.

I had to replace mine also. at about 55000 kms. In my view after the Voltage Regulator the 2nd most common problem with the 3rd and 4th Gen. Worst part of this job was cleaning off the old gasket.

This is what I found when I opened it up (old on the left new on the right)

I replaced the springs and rollers also but they seemed fine (Just the cracked Outer Starter Clutch was all I needed to replace)

Parts I ordered (common to all 90-97 VFR's I think)

    3 x Rollers - Part # 91101-516-000
    3 x Springs - Part # 28125-MT4-000
    1 x Outer Starter Clutch - Part # 28120-ML7-690
    1 x Right side gaskit - Part # 13494-MY7-000

    Honda Special Tool (Gear Holder)

Honda sells a small piece of a gear with a little handle attached to it to wedge in between the gears to keep them from spinning while turning the starter clutch bolts(tightening or loosening.)

I used a big cheap screwdriver. The gears are hardened steel, should be fine.

Remember the thread lock on the 3 starter clutch bolts, and I think you are supposed to oil the center bolt before reinstall? Better check that.

Ditto on the gasket scraping. If anyone knows any tricks to speed up that process, I'm all ears.

BTW, my problems occured at around 28K miles.

Thanks to all; all of the posts added something different to the issue. And Skybucket, thanks for that reminder about the center bolt; I now remember reading about that somewhere during my research. What did we do before the internet forums came along?...

I just started this fix last night on my 94 VFR750 @ 50k. Was wondering if you put oil or threadlocker on the center bolt on the re-install.

The manual says to put threadlocker on the three cover bolts, but nothing on the center bolt. Torque the cover bolts to 40 Nm / 29 lb.ft. and the center bolt to 90 Nm / 65 lb.ft. You can use a copper penny instead of the special gear holder tool.

Has anyone tried a Clutch outer from Bike Bandit. I have a 95 vfr 750F. Know there was a bit of confusion with the interchangeable years.
