    Hey

Does anyone know what the average life expectancy for an 86' VF500 interceptor is? There is a bike near me with about 80,000 kilometres (50k miles) for $1000 CAD. He says that the only problems are a sticky rear brake and a small oil leak.

    Thanks

    Wow....that's alot of Mileage.

I don't think there is a true answer to this as it depends on how well the bike has been treated.

An answer from someone more experienced would be something I'd be interested to hear also.

You'd probably wanna hear the motor run before purchasing.

As with anything else, it depends on how well it was maintained. With the 500, valve adjustments are important. Just try to determine as best as you can how the bike was treated. You can tell a lot by the condition of it.

I talked to the guy selling it again and he said there is a fair bit of valve train clatter. He also says that he has done the valve adjustments faithfully in the time he's had it, but he's only owned it for the last 3000 kilometres. Is there something I could do to fix that up, or is that cause for me to pass it up with the mileage that it has.

ASK yourself whether you want to wrench or to ride.

If you want to ride, get a newer bike.

A newer bike may cost more in the initial purchase but cost less over time.

Just look on this site at the myriad VF 500 problems b4 commiting yourself .

Parts can be a serious issue when you find that they are no longer available !

that was very diplomatic of you squirrel.......oh wait it wasnt a Gen 1 bike :boink:

but squirrel make a valid point...if the bike has been maintained...then it could and should last another 80000 miles... or you could buy it ride it 10 miles and caflooiey...no more bike....so choose wisely...
