I was thinking there might be enough room inside the fairing for a bypass filter on this bike. I notice there is a 2-section oil pump. Does the side that pumps through the oil cooler supply any other part of the engine? I might put the bypass filter in series with that.

I'm a real believer in bypass filters to really take the smallest particles out. Makes sense to be in a long-lived engine like this. Maybe stretch its life even farther.

I've been a professional mechanic on most every kind of vehicle at one time or other, and suggest you get/fabricate an adapter (probably with hoses)to permit the mounting of as big a filter as you can in the available space.

In reality, doing relatively frequent changes, and using a top level synthetic, like spectro, or red line, etc will probably be every bit as good.

    Filter

If you use a Honda filter and change regularly you would be beeting a dead horse. The factory filter is a very high quality unit. Cut one open , it may put your mind at rest.

Well, I don't think any fullflow filter can come close to what a bypass can do. The latter simply takes all particles out that can hurt your engine yet still get through the fullflow.

I am in a fairly dusty environment, so it's a concern.

I have a bypass on my VW Passat, that now has 190k miles on it. Really think it helps.

Unfortunately, when I asked an Amsoil tech about this, he thought it was a bad idea. Not sure I understand why. He said, "Sorry this response took so long. I wanted to check with some other techs regarding this. We can’t recommend using the BMK18 kit with a motorcycle. We have never tested it with a motorcycle and there doesn’t seem to be a good way to plumb it. There is also an issue with low oil pressure." They have a single example on their website (BMK11) of a motorcycle use - a Harley.

Well, I will keep this at the back of my mind. I discovered the output of the cooler circuit dumps into a gallery where it (mixed with sump oil) is picked up by the main pump, thus using cooler oil in the main circuit. If I put a bypass in series with the cooler, less oil would flow through and be cooled, so that's not good. Of course the bypass filter would itself cool oil, but still...

    Oil testing

If your that concerned about it have the oil tested and find out at oil changes what is in it ,and have it on a running record. Your local Cat dealer should do this for thirteen dollars and will mail you the results and you can mail the samples as well. All Cat dealers provide this service and it is called SOS.....for scheduled oil sampling.

second filter is overkill, and may cause lower oil pressure........?

I wasn't proposing a second filter, but moving the filter to a position where a larger and higher capacity filter could be used. Two filters would increase flow rate, and potentially increase pressure more than a single filter, but I think is unnecessary complexity in an already crowded engine area.

Look at http://www.kalecoauto.com ....... it's got some hilarious stuff!

Yup. Even old VW Beetles w/2.7 liter capacity and no filter did ok. the biggest problem was heat load on the valves, and main bearings that moved because of crank flex, but not lube problems.

Off to the Colo San Juans this weekend........ taking the 4wheeler for Black Bear pass of CW McCall fame:biggrin:
