Just picked up a Craigslist special. Please see link below.

1984 Honda VF1000 Interceptor project bike

I've always loved these bikes, but stayed away because of the cam issues. My plans are to restore this baby back to its glory days. I've got a few CB1100f, and I think this one will fit right in. Right off the bat I'm going to assume the engine needs work, so I'll pestering you all here.

Physically, it looks great for a project bike. Usually it's the bodywork that's in shambles. Nice acquisition.

I'm on a learning curve with these bikes. I know their are solutions out there to fix the cam issues. That's why I came here, to the expert. I'm working on a 1981 CB900f that I found on CL, so as soon as that's done I'll drag this bike in my garage, until then she will sit in my shed. So right now I'm going do a lot of reading and learning until I'm ready. I sat on the bike last night and she felt real good. I was amazed with all the gauges these bike has on them.

For the oil kit you have two options, the Dave Dodge kit which puts an oil tap in between the oil filter and block and runs two separate lines up to the heads or the drill and tap method; drill in to the main oil gallery from the bottom of the motor, tap it and use some Earls fittings/lines to run a single line (size 4) up to a T, then two lines (size 3) to the heads. The Dodge kit is about $300 and available through eBay. You can get the fittings and lines for the drill & tap approach for about $60. Member Jamie Daugherty also sells the fittings/lines in a complete kit if you don't want to figure all the details out yourself. I did the drill method on my '85.

Nice bike, I'd like to pick one up myself for my next project.

Nice score. Looks like it's in pretty good shape for that price! Hopefully it doesn't need much to get it in riding condition.

Had a locksmith look at the gas tank (key would not open it) . What he found was the lock was dirty inside and a tumbler was stuck, all works fine now. Inside the tank is another story, lots of rust. So any ideas on how to clean the inside of a rust tank? I'll do some searching and see what I can find.

I just used the POR kit to restore an '85 tank. Depending on how bad it is you may need two applications of the first step, the 'Marine Clean' solvent. It's a bunch of work but came out good and tank will probably last longer than me now. Search the web, I bought mine online from POR.

If you can find a radiator shop to boil it out that's another option. I haven't read many good reviews of the Kreem brand kit.

Nice  I just picked one up myself, not quite as nice as yours, but I'll get her there.

Nabbed it for $250 from an impound lot in non-running condition, took apart the ignition switch did some soldering & bam fired right up ~ next is the clutch & Carbs :frown:

<-- Got a couple of pics in my gallery

    Nice find!

The bodywork looks great for a 1st gen. bike.
If the motor is shot, you can probably get what you paid or more just selling off the tank and bodywork.

you'll spend more time working on that antique than riding it.

What looked good then looks way outdated now unless overweight, underbraked and poorly suspended are desirable traits.

old bikes are just that: old!

Just consider all the newer, better bikes available on the used market out there b4 you throw money at it.

buying Granny a new running suit and new trainers won't make her a sprinter.
