Thanks Crusty. As you get anywhere near Monterey don't speed. They were out in force the last few years stopping anyone going even 3MPH over the limit; especially motorcycles. They do not mess around not one bit... :tsk:

Traffic control at Laguna is by CHP. Many of the officers there are sportbike riders and get to see the races and earn a few extra bucks as well.

Unless policy has changed, of recent, when anyone is stopped by CHP for a moving violation a citation is issued.

CHP is aware of the number of riders who will be playing Ricky Racer on the way to Laguna from any direction except West to East..;) I think the US Coast Guard takes care of that end.

its never been a "policy" that I'm aware of...every citation issued is the officers perogative.(sp) I have been stopped many times by the chp and have only had one ticket issued........that was in 88...... so not sure where you get your "policy"
Just like people think there is a quota of tickets that have to be written by each officer.
any way thats not the point of this thread.

    be safe......

Although some 20 years after the last time you were stopped. We might safely assume some policy changes were made when Comissioner Mike Brown resigned and was replaced by Joe Farrow in 2008.

We IMO, might also safely assume that the CHP will be in force as the Ricky Racers leave the races and head toward all points of the compass.

CHP Officers may issue warnings on small matters like burnt out head and tail lamps but to infer that any of them is going to smile and keep moving when some dude is hitting the ton on 101 is a little far fetched.

Hence the old saying, "Tell it to the Judge."

CHP Officers assigned to traffic who show up at the end of shift with zero citations in thier books may not have quotas but you can lay money that somebody is gonna ask why no citations were issued.

So did you like Ponch and John or Broderick Crawford best?

1988 was the last ticket, not necessarily the last stop. Hooked on phonics worked for me!

you are correct...the last time I was stopped was about a month ago in my truck...I was also stopped on my bike twice in the last couple of months...(before it went dormant) no tickets.......all three times it was the CHP and the ticket i got in 88 was actually a blessing......he could have popped me for much worse....(130+ in a 65) instead he wrote me for 75 in a 65...oh yeah the three recent stops were moving violations........not fix its

I hated the show.......they were goobersallthree of them especially when Jons nephew, towards the end of the series became a CHP officer and Ponch became a capta...........I mean it was a goober show...

Got stopped by CHP on the I-5 near Willows Ca. in April on my way back from SLO3. I was not breaking any land records but I certainly was not holding up traffic. No ticket, no written warning just a chat at roadside. I would have written the ticket myself at that speed. 87/65

I don't doubt they will be out in full force and given the circumstances, their tolerances may be low. But to suggest that all moving violations will result in a ticket, is simply not true. To be on the safe side, when going to these events, behave in and around the venue.

I never had a quota, I could write all I wanted,....when I was able to do so. Sometimes I really wished I still could. Just about got beaned with a pop can on the freeway a couple days ago. And the bastard had a bike in the back of his truck.

California in 1988 had recently revised it's speed laws upping the Federally mandated 55mph limit.

For general consumption for Calfornians and those who ride and drive in California a good thing to have is a copy of the California Vehicle Code.

An overview of the California "speed" law.

I'll have to try the "hooked on phonics" defense sometime since double parking is a "moving violation" and ironically when double parked one is not only stopped but can be stopped for same.

California's "Basic Speed Law",[70] part of the California Vehicle Code, defines the maximum speed at which a car may travel as a "reasonable and prudent" speed, given road conditions. The numerical limit set by Caltrans engineers for speed limit signs, generally found on all non-controlled-access routes, is considered a presumptive maximum "reasonable and prudent" speed.

Many speed limit signs are identified as "maximum speed", usually when the limit is 55 mph (89 km/h) or more. When the National Maximum Speed Law was enacted, California was forced to create a new legal signage category, "Maximum Speed", to indicate to drivers that the Basic Speed Law did not apply for speeds over the federally-mandated speed cap; rather, it would be a violation to exceed the fixed maximum speed indicated on the sign, regardless of whether the driver's speed could be considered "reasonable and prudent".

A driver can receive a traffic citation for violating the Basic Speed Law even if their speed is below the "maximum speed limit" if road, weather, or traffic conditions make that speed unsafe. However, because the Basic Speed Law establishes prima facie limits, not absolute ones, they can also defend against a citation for speeding "by competent evidence that the speed in excess of said limits did not constitute a violation of the basic speed law at the time, place and under the conditions then existing," per section 22351(b) of the California Vehicle Code.[71] As attorney David W. Brown says in his book Fight Your Ticket & Win in California, "a person traveling over the speed limit–but less than the usual 65 mph maximum speed (55 mph for two-lane undivided highways)–isn't necessarily violating the law"[72] and that "you can defend against a charge of violating the Basic Speed Law not only by showing you weren't exceeding the speed limit, but also by establishing that even if you were over the limit, your speed was nevertheless 'safe' under the circumstances."[73]

The speed limit on rural freeways, such as parts of I-5, I-8, I-10, I-15, I-40, and U.S. 101 on the central coast, and SR 99 south of Madera and Fresno, have 70 mph (113 km/h) speed limits. Because I-80 passes exclusively through urban and mountainous areas, its highest speed limit is only 65 mph. In downtown Los Angeles, the maximum speed limit is 55 MPH. This includes the entire length of the Pasadena Freeway between Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles, and portions of the Hollywood, Santa Ana, Santa Monica, and Harbor Freeways. The default limit on 2-lane roads is 55 mph. However, Caltrans or a local agency can post a speed of up to 65 mph after an engineering study.[74]

All of these highways feature supplementary signage stating "AUTOS WITH TRAILERS/TRUCKS 55 MAXIMUM". Maximum truck/autos with trailers limit applies to trucks with 3 or more axles and all vehicles when towing. As of 2007, these signs are being replaced with signage stating "ALL VEHICLES WHILE TOWING 55 MAXIMUM".

In California, the Maximum Speed in school zones is 25 mph, but is in effect only if children are present within that school zone.
