Sorry for your bike! I have just one observation. A bike doesn't stop very fast when sliding on its side. It only takes once, and you're lucky you didn't hurt yourself with your first hard lesson. Mine was going 30-35 mph in heavy rain on a Yamaha 250, when a large speed bump came up out of nowhere under the poor visibility. Front brake- small ouch and a bent peg. So mine was much luckier.

In most any car/bike accident, you'll be much better off staying on your tires. When I went over the hood of a car a couple years ago, the cop actually criticized me, because there was only a very short straight skid mark ending several yards before the place of impact. Well, that's because I decided to swerve hard left, so I lessened the brakes. In hindsight a poor decision. I couldn't make it, anyway, so I should have just continued straight and shed an additional 10-15mph before impact. But at least I stayed on the bike and flew over the car, rather than faceplanting into the side of it at 45 mph. I actually remember telling myself the instant that car pulled out "Ok, this is going to hurt, but I'm not going to die. Just don't dump the bike, or that could be your life." Well, it was the condensed version, but it had the same meaning. So oddly enough, that meant I didn't brake any harder than I was comfortable in previous practice. My lesson on the Virago stayed with me. Locking the front tire happens suddenly, and even in a straight line, it can offer no chance for recovery. (Virago went down like a 2 dollar ho. I'm sure yours did, too.) So do you want your bike to hit that car's bumper, or your helmet?

Come to think of it, I laid down my first VFR trying to coax it down a wet grass hill (don't ask.) The back brake was totally useless. It was sliding around at the slightest provocation. I touched a little front, and compared with the butt slide I got when the Virago dumped me, I learned a sport bike rewards this mistake with a face plant. :)

Tell me, did you get your left hand out in time, and what did the glove look like in the end?

    Keep the rubber down.

Well, nobody else is saying it so I think we should start up a petition to ban you from the board! As a matter of fact I think we should confiscate all of your motorcycles so that you can not do this again!! Not necessarily a lifetime ban but maybe just a few years. I will volunteer to take the motorcycles you currently have and of course ride them so that they do not waste away in a storage unit somewhere.:biggrin:

Just kidding of course.  (except about taking the bikes)

Glad to hear your okay and already riding again. Take care and this is a good reminder of how fast even simple rides can go bad...

Damn that sucks. Your loss will hopefully be a useful lesson to someone else. I know I get a little lazy in the saddle and will follow slow moving traffic too closely thinkin "I got this". I will take your lesson and give a few extra car lengths as well as keep my focus on the object in front of me.
I am truly sorry for your loss brother.
I hear that in vehicles, ( I dont know about moto's) the insurance gives you cash and will sell your bike back to you as a salvaged title - this is how my brother got the down payment for his house AND got to keep his 4x4.

Anyways, glad you made it home and had the courage to post an always welcome message about safety. Thank you, hope you get some sun through the clouds on this one.

Yeah, what are ya gonna do? Luck and distance is all that keeps us safe sometimes. Sounds like you came up short on both.

Just a thought-don't fall for the "buy your bike back" scam. You own the motorcycle, says so on your title. The insurance company's duty to you is "make you whole", and you are under no obligation to give them your bike in return for their payment.

Sorry for the accident, I'm glad you're OK, next time keep your self far away of the cars in front of you, check ebay for the spare parts I've seen a lot of side covers and other stuff. Take care and Grettings from Mexico.
