Yes...a big difference in cultures. It is a very American thing to have the right to bear arms. After 9/11 there was an increase in gun ownership. And then with this economic downturn there has been another increase in ownership. Lots of folks have turned their banked money into gold or cash (to keep at home) and so they want to arm themselves against possible thievery or...well, I guess the possibility of a melt-down of society. This is a huge issue.
(Please note I am not taking a stand here...just pointing out the issue...)

Well stated. I agree with you 100%. Regarding the New Orleans metropolitan area, your statement certainly applies.

America is much bigger than GB and filled with more people deserving of being shot, so we need more weapons. Pretty much in Oregon, you have to file paperwork to not be issued an automatic CCW so I guess we're blessed in that regard. Of course it's balanced back to the negative by all the tree hugging, pitchole smelling, dirt bag, street urchins around on every goddamn corner...

Come stroll through Detroit with me... we'll see how threatened you are then and how "helpful" the good citizens will be then...

For those not blessed to be American, our culture may seem strange, we are as peace loving as any nation, we have just learned that "the price of freedom is eternal vigilence".
Another great man said " our reluctance to conflict must not be seen as a failure of will".
Ive been a citzen, soldier, a policeman, and a father. I hold all these things very dear to my heart. I've eaten shit on four continents, left young men to sacriface for their cause on two. I am not a killer, a mercinary, or a criminal. I hold fast in the fact that over a couple hundred years ago, a bunch of dead guys got together and wrote down some ideas that became a nation. A Brit, a long time ago, said some profound words "War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." It's cool. As a Canadian, an Englishman, a Frenchman or any people on this earth that need, can count on people from this backwards, violent, arrogant nation, to cowboy up, set the standard and kick ass for what we beleive in. As a mater of fact, you might have a relative or neighbor that might have been around when we did just that.

I thought you lived in NY with all that snow in your avatar?

I've walked through Gary, IN and the worst of Chicago/NY and didn't need a gun fortunately. Felt threatened sure, but never felt the need for a gun. I'm only 41 so maybe some crackhead out there still has my number. Fortunately I only buy crack a couple times a week from the crackheads I know so the risk is small.

All in good fun lads, do what you need to do.

Thanks. I have just added tree huggers, dirtbags and street urchins to my list of targets.

I may have a solution for smelly pitcholes. I lived in Mexico for a year and it's true, goat does have a unique odor, a little vinegar as a baste will cut down the smell. I prefer the pitcholes with corn rather than flour tortillas.

Tortillas de maiz is what you really want to ask for not tortillas de flor.

If I got a little extreame on the last post, I'm sorry. I'm not out to bash on anybody. I was raised my grandmother who was building B-24's durring "the Biltz" in the UK. I am somewhere to the right of Atilla the Hun. I just have had the discomfort of being in the shit a few times, ran into a thug gunfight a few months back, that had some pucker factor! I was a sniper on active, distance is my friend. maybe smart people dont run INTO gun fights, but there I was, again. Had my .45 and wishing for my M4 or at least my 12 ga. I'm still here, snagged the guy. He's facing fed charges now, looking at a long time. Of all the things i was thinking,my thoughts were, don't f*@k up..., brethe, your hart rate is to high, be calm, you can do this. Half hour later I got the shakes. Damn,I coulda used some body on the spot with a CCW to have my back. I'm a HUGE supporter of trained, armed citzens. It makes life easier on us.

Tris, is there no crime in Great Britain? Maybe you can use your motorcycle keys as a weapon. But I'm sure the guy who takes the initiative to break the law will bring something better.

VFRhusband. I woulda said more, but you said it pretty well, IMO. Freedom has a price.

More often then not, vintage USMC Ka-Bar. It's great for cutting limes, a sammiche, and for defense against an attacking bear should the need arise.

For more wildernessy trips; Glock 21, man-cannon.

There's a shit load of crime in the UK

Having been burgled twice now, there is a 3' length of 2"x2" in the bedroom and the next bastard that comes in my house if I lay my hands on him will be beaten within an inch of his life

However, in general, armed assult is still generally quite rare. In the big cities though the Oiks are having a bit of go stabbing each other - but that only improves the gene pool from my perspective

To be honest though, it surprises me that we don't have more violent crime and generally the police aren't armed. I wonder how long that will remain the case???

    Tris

    PS
I opened this thread in the first place because I though I was going to read something about motor cycle insurance and wondered if it was different to what we have in the UK and found myself in a whole different world

Good ol' lake effect snow always has one last hurrah in April.

And Detroit isn't tooooooooo bad... like any city there are always certain locations that are worse than others.

Btw...keep it on the d/l if you're packin' in Detroit...their officers are SKITTISH!!! ...and they like to think that their city law over rules the state's law regarding open carry and concealed carry...NOT SO. They won't even tell you that you can do it lol... I got dirty looks and quick conversation changes when I asked them about it in front of some concealed carry classes lol. They try to avoid it like the plague.

Hell, in my little hick town there's always some little old lady phoning the police to let them know a man has a gun holstered on his hip in the open at a store(open carry law here). Or even if they see a bulge in a jacket( I know, i know, concealed is supposed to be concealed) but a friend has had to deal with the po-po twice for that now. All at the grocery store lol.

Sorry to hijack but...here is my state's latest move (from MSNBC):

Arizona approves bill allowing guns in bars
Critics of the measure say guns and alcohol are dangerous combination

But they don't allow smoking in bars anymore! What do you all think? Guns in bars...good or bad?

Great response! This topic is kind of a tough one...
in a sense not really much changes. Because if you carry (concealed or not) the gun probably stays in the car so if trouble starts, people can just walk to the car and get it. And as a matter of fact, we have bar parking lot battles every so often.
    Anyway...I was hijacking the Thread!
    Carry on! (pun intended)

It really should be up to the owners of the bars to allow guns inside or not.

Does AZ have a law stating the legal limit of BAC for person's carrying? I know Michigan does...IT IS .02 BAC. However that is for carrying on person or in your vehicle. HOWEVER, as long as the pistol is unloaded and located in a locked compartment in the trunk and separate from the ammunition then you're kosher.

I think it'd be nice to carry in bars if you weren't drinking, but carrying while drinking is just a terrible idea. Like others have said, the guns are just a short walk to the car anyways.

I also like the idea of bar owners being able to decide. A whole lot less liability for them if they just don't allow it.

I still can't believe some states have banned smoking in public facilities. Personal choice to smoke and personal choice to not smoke. Should we start filtering the Earth's atmosphere to help out non-smokers even more? Personally, I think it's up the establishments owner whether to permit smoking in their facility or not.

Apparently, you can only do something detrimental to your health as long as there is zero chance of affecting anyone else... OH WAIT...doesn't using internal combustion engine's affect everyone's health and the planet's? So we're all suppose to ride bicycles soon? What's next? No alcohol? No contact sports? No video games? No fast food? Where's the line going to be drawn if ever?
