I won't go into a lot of detail since you can read/watch the story if you wish, but the military loses a LOT of young people to bike accidents. I was in this first class by the USAF at Offutt AFB in Nebraska where they are trying to keep these kids alive. You might be surprised how many young 20's kids buy an R6 or even R1 as their first bike.

I'm a Air Force Sport Bike Coach. It's sad, in a 5 year period, the USAF has lost more people to sport bikes than have been lost in the entire Iraq II war. Mentoring is where it's at. 90% of the time, it's not lack of skill, it's lack of brains or maturity.

You said, it. Very rarely does anyone ever exceed the bikes capabilities, but their own. The kid in the interview is the bike safety rep for the squadron I work with. Oddly enough, he and I had the highest risk score (dead in the middle of average) of anyone in the class. One kid had a score of like 3 and he admitted to riding side-saddle at 80mph. Hmm, methinks most of the kids weren't real honest in their risk calculations. Just like they kid themselves when riding. You are right, mentoring is the key. Bring up the new riders correctly and keep them around.

    New video

The topic of sport bikes made the news here in Omaha recently when a guy got busted for 188 on the interstate. I am wondering if the cops radar just ran out of numbers cuz he was going faster and it just flashed 188 at him. The TV news ran another story about the military sport bike rider class again. You can see me on the beautiful (to me) red VFR at 1:15, 2:30 and various points between. The first part you even get to hear that sweet gear driven cam sound in the link below.

Can't say I really liked that video. This is mostly due to the terminology & attitude of the reporter.

What class were you taking & who developed it?

Did you notice that when they were interviewing one of the bikers they had a label "Speed bike owner"? Does that mean when they interview a harley rider they label them "Slow bike owner"? ha aha ha ha!!

This was from back in June. The news revived it cuz of the dude running near 200 down the Interstate. This was the first AF wide sport bike training class held here at Offutt and they brought in M/C instructors from bases all over the states to train the trainers.

    Joey,

The trouble seems to be that these 20 year old kids (airmen, marines, whatever) decide they want a bike they all go out and get GXRs, R6s and R1s and the like. Put a brand new rider on a bike with way over 100hp makes for a pretty steep learning curve for these kids. Sadly a lot are failing. So, yeah, they do become 'speed' bikes. I love the line about 'slow' bike riders. I am gonna use that line a lot with my friends who ride only cruisers. Props to you for a great quote.
