Oh my, I thought there for a second we had an agreement. Now it would seem there's a 95 foot gap, or one or the other of us needs glasses.

Making assumptions on what one's profession is or isn't based on scant evidence from an internet post is not really a great idea. Case in point, I have never stated that painting is my profession.

Loaded can be taken in several contexts. One in particular might even be so loaded that a great paint job looks bad or vice versa depending on what one might be loaded on. (please excuse the prepositional phrase)

Would you be willing to share experiences as they accumulate? I would certainly appreciate it and I know some of the other guys who are technically oriented would like die and stuff for some of that neat stuff you like know about.

    rustoleum roll job

    Guys,
Anybody read the story....it was a shame the went through all the work they did just to do a job that looked ok from the street.....skydog ,boy with all the knowledge you garnered by working two summers in a body shop ought to have you prepared to repare anything no matter what the damage two or four wheeled...I would love to see the job you do to that VFR...How many of you ever spend an afternoon or two trying to buff a vehicle...I'd guess not too many....The job I did on my classic GS850 if it had been done in a booth would be done now that is what the new technology is about...the painter paints it walks out of the paint room and is done .....no rubbing buffing, sanding down waxing to get a sheen.....Four days to get a job that looked ok from the street.....skydog what do you or mrbadbilly think you are worth a day? and no one ever said anything about spending $2500 dollars on a paint job.....and if you dont think your bike is worthy of a $1000. paint job divide that amount by what your days are worth....hmmm not as bad as you thought is it.....A single stage paint job materials set, using urethane...which is a color and an activator, for a bike like a 5th gen VFR would likely be no more than $200.....get the bike ready, I used a saw horse and made brackets to hold the parts like they would be when riding. A sealer coat is like insurance
paint once walk away let set put it back on the bike two days max.....DIYis not a dirty word, thats how half the "hot rods' of the days of yore were made, just do the damn thing right.....

You have no reason to be a dick to me. All I did was state my opinion that a good, quality paint job can be achieved for a small sum of money if you have some basic skills and basic tools. You on the other hand are attacking me for my age and overall being an asshole just because I don't agree with what you are saying.

I may be the younger one here, but it looks like you are the one that needs to grow up.

Well, I like to think I can fix anything with the skills I learned working at a bodyshop. But I wasn't trying to say I can do an awesome job no matter what for super cheap. (in fact, I've had my fair share of paint jobs gone wrong for one reason or another.) My posts were just to state my opinion that you can do a quality job for cheap without hiring a professional.

You may have worked at a body shop two summers, but I'll tell you what I had kids who worked for me do. You were a HELPER. If you worked for me (or any of the other 3 painters in the shop) you unmasked cars, cleaned up the booth and my general area, sanded primer (after you were shown how and didn't F it up), cut in parts, fetched things for me. You would have been a $300.00 a week HELPER. I WOULD NOT (nor any of the guys I have known for the last 20 years) let you touch any of my color or clear guns, nor let you in the booth to paint a job, period. If you showed above average aptitude I "MAY" have let my helper cut in parts, NEVER buff anything.Wet sand maybe if they weren't a ham fisted idiot (most things required nibbing and that's all anyway) General clean up and washed the cars when done before the shop owner developed a detail shop attached to the body shop. We were a high volume shop that was a direct repair facility for Geico, State Farm, Allstate, and Farmers Ins. We had 4 full time painters, 12 body men and 6 laser alignment frame racks. I worked for THAT shop for the last 7 years I worked as a painter. Any monkey can hold a spray gun, not any monkey can paint.

I am not trying to denigrate YOU in anyway, I am merely pointing out the FACTS as I know them from spending half of my oldest child's life feeding and clothing her by doing that kind of work (as you so brilliantly pointed out, I'm an "old" guy). You have what MOST young guys have wrong at your age, you know EVERYTHING (I did at that age also) My dad who was a very, very smart guy (and gets smarter the older I get) told me that "son, you are frozen nearly solid from the neck up until about 28-30, then you slowly begin to defrost!"

That being said, you can try to run all the B.S. past people on this forum or others, but be aware that there are people out here who read and occasionally post that actually KNOW BETTER. You can come up with whatever contrived response you like after you read this, but know this. I KNOW BETTER, and now anyone else who has read my post with a lick of brains does too. Have a great day!!

Turns out you DON'T know better. There were 2 employees at the shop I worked at. Myself and the owner. Speaking of thinking you know everything, I like how you just assume I'm just like all the young guys that work for you. We specialized in classic cars actually. And I worked right beside the owner every single day. He has painted and done bodywork for longer than I have been alive... I think he knows his shit. Furthermore, I did everything. Bodywork, paint, wet sanding, welding, everything. I don't claim to know everything. I never did. I said that I believe I can fix most anything (bodywork-wise that is), and I believe I can. You have no right to judge my skills or tell me I was a "HELPER" because I was far from it.

Cool, gimme his shop name and phone number. I'm sure he and I can come up with lots of common ground to talk about as I have been restoring cars longer than you have been alive also. You want to start throwing out statements like you are lets verify them. I deal in facts and the verification of peoples statements. If you are what you say you are I will NO PROBLEM apologize and retract any and all statements I have made that were contrary to what you have said you are, are capable of, etc. PLUS it will show EVERYONE who has read or will read this thread that you are truly a stand up young man and not some know it all young jackass like soo many other young men your age.

In short, put up or shut up. I can scan (if I can find them) ALL my certifications, school qualifications etc. from my days as an automotive painter. I also am willing to scan my credentials as a LEO, K9 handler, gang investigator, etc. I am what I say I am and can prove it. CAN YOU? As I said man, you appear to be a young guy just like so many other young guys very full of themselves and all knowing. It does not impress, especially here. It may on a Honda car tuners forum, but not here.

In closing, we are all waiting.

I'm not just going to give you the phone number of my former boss. I haven't even spoken to him since last summer. I don't think he would appreciate a phone call from a guy on a forum verifying that I did indeed work for him and I do indeed know a little bit about body/paint.

Believe me or don't, doesn't bother me too much.

Can't we just agree to disagree? I collect a few expensive things just to put behind glass. I also consider a VFR a work of art, but I'd rather ride it into the ground then to show people how great it looks. If I cared what the majority of people thought about how my bike looked, I'd get a Harley. We're talking about 2 different things, here, so you all are arguing about nothing. I don't see why people have to all start asking for former employer's phone numbers (a little over the top?) just because they don't agree on... what is this all about anyway?

    Person 1:
"You can do a quality paint job without hiring a professional or spending tons of money."

Person 2,3 (you should know who you are)
"Wow, you're wrong. But rather than give you some pointers or helpful advice, or even explain why you're wrong. I'll just list all my credentials and years of service then call you an idiot. And/or compare you to the Three Stooges."

Person 4: respectfully disagrees, and adds useful information. (Rob, thank you)

Can't wait to see the cheap shot that follows this. But before you do, have a break and go back and read all the comments that you've already made, please, and try to figure out what question you were trying to answer in the first place. 80% of the retorts don't even make sense. They just go off on their own individual tangents, with the main purpose apparently to demonstrate the length of the poster's penis.

I think you are trying to articulate the opinion that DIY is achievable with reasonable cost and I agree with you 100%
Would it look like 2500 paint job? No and what's the point really you can buy an entire motorcycle for that kind of money.
I don't understand why lot of hostility is coming towards you.Motorcyclists by nature including me are free thinkers and most of us would prefer to do our maintenance and fixes which after all why most of us ride...
Keep up your free spirit!! Kudos to you!

How are you being an asshole? First off, the definition of asshole is: A stupid and or utterly contemptible person.

Dude, you are acting like both. I don’t know how long you’ve been on public message boards, but let me lay out some advice. Learn how to communicate your opinion so people hear it without stepping on the toes of former professionals. Politics? That shit is open game and flame away, but painting with high performance coatings is not a subjective issue. You either do it right, or don’t do it at all.

Now you and I have more in common than you may think. I used to spray a high performance coating in my former life when I lived in Maryland. I re-clear coated the 1993 VFR I had because the yahoo at the bike shop did a ‘shit’ job. Am I an expert, no. But I can spot a shit job to a really fantastic job from a mile away. Your presupposition that “the average person” won’t know is dangerous thinking. I’ve seen more people, who don’t know jack about painting, pick out flaws. The reason? They are used to seeing professional work. So when a mediocre job comes by, they may not know what’s wrong, but they can see something is wrong.

You have to remember a professional (you worked with them so you should) is only separated from another professional through their “integrity” or ‘virtue of character”. A professional doesn’t want to do a half-assed job, that the customer may like because it cost 300-500 bucks, only to have that work picked apart from other professionals in their area.

Back to what we have in common. I like DIY stuff. And I agree with you, THAT if you read some “how to” books, take your time with the project and follow all appropriate steps and directions. You CAN do a very nice paint job on your own motorcycle for 500 bucks or less. A paint job that’s even nice enough the ‘professional’ when they see it may ask you who did it? When you reply “I did” they’ll give you a nod of respect, which is also the perfect time to pick their brains for how to do it better next time.

In closing, there is a major difference in the 500.00 job and the 1500.00 job. I saw this myself. A guy I know who fixes up and sells sport bikes had this early 90’s GSXR 750, that had a crap DIY job on it, repainted for 500.00 bucks. A really nice deep red. But here was the deal. It was one of his friends who owns a shop. He uses whatever leftover product he may have that’s still good and if he has enough he sprays the bike. Minimal prep work, body filler, etc. But I got to say, for 500 bucks!? Damn! what a really nice one color job. The painter though doesn’t want people to know he sprayed it! Why, he didn’t do full prep work. That was deal with Mike. I’ll spray the bike to get rid of leftover product and make some quick monies, but don’t tell anybody it’s my work. Speaks volumes to me. The other paint job is a friend and fellow MSF rider coach who has a Beemer. Jerry shows up to class and looks like he has a different bike, same model as before, different colors. I ask him what happened to the other Beemer? He said nothing, got this one painted. Skydog, it was absolutely immaculate. I combed over that bike and found no flaws whatsoever. I asked Jerry how much did it cost? 1500.00 bucks he said.

I could see where the extra monies went.

OK, so what to do from here? My final piece of advice is think about doing a really nice “How to” on painting your own or a friends bike doing it DIY style. People love that shit on VFRW. I did a “How to Repair Plastic” write up when I first joined. Like painting, you can do it many different ways with different products. But like painting, there is only one correct way to do it and that’s follow the fucking directions

People on here will give you the nod of respect you deserve for things like that. But if you keep challenging people more in the know than you…the shit will keep hitting the fan.

It’s not always about being right; it’s more about how you did it and the pros and cons of such.

    Peace,

    BZ
