    Greetings Collective:

I know the answers will vary widely, but here goes.

I'm looking for recommendations for hot weather riding pants.

    1. for perferated leather maybe like the
    Tour Master Apex Air Pants

    2. and textile/Mesh (convertable?) like Joe Rocket Alter Ego Pants (i have worn these and liked them pretty well, not sure about durability/protection)

Obviously I know that leather will typically provide more protection.
i'm not track riding, just twistys in July.

I'm poor so i'm trying to keep it under $200...

    appreciate your thoughts.

I've been quite happy with my Fieldsheer Titanium Air 2 Pants. They are mesh pants but do have armor in the knees and padding in the hips. They also have extra fabric reinforcement on the back of the pants to protect your arse. I sweat like a whore in church and these have done a great job of keeping me nice and cool in the humid summer Georgia heat.

    Regards,
    Rollin

These work well for me, when it gets too hot for leather. They are very warm when the liner is in. The complete suit keeps me warm below 40, and comfortable, all summer, with the liner stripped out. They breathe very well. I have not crash tested them, but they seem comparable to other brands. They meet the cost criteria mentioned.
    I would buy them again.

I'm quite interested in this topic as well. My current setup is only for mild weather but maybe it'll help you in your decision as well.

I'm currently using the First Gear HT Air 2.0 Mesh Overpants.

They're uber comfortable and have full length zippers on the external shell AND waterproof liner. I just got them this season so I haven't tested the hot weather performance of them. They're not FULL mesh pants so they won't be the coolest but they offer great versatility. Firstgear offers a ""Mesh-Tex 2.0" Mesh Pants" which are a full mesh design that I would assume have similar comfort and quality.

My current partial mesh design pants link.

Full Mesh Pants I'm looking into link.

    EDIT:
I forgot to add that I upgraded the armor in my pants. The knees come with a soft sponge foam(open cell I think they call it) design and the hips had super thin, but higher density foam similar to memory foam. I replaced the knees with Core Comp armor (LINK) and the hips with Hiprotech Armor(LINK). The core comp armor can be placed in front of the stock foam pads adding greater protection but we'll see how cool the pants are this summer. I haven't received my hip armor yet as it was back-ordered and I'll update once I get them.

These are the pants I have. I've worn them a couple of seasons so far and like them alot. The are very nice in the heat and with both liners installed, are very warm. I've ridden down into the 30's with them no problem. I was not expecting them to be worth a flip in the cooler temps, but to my surprise they are. Bonus.

I'd recommend them no problem. Have a look.

First Gear MeshTex. I found the Joe Rocket Alter Ego's to be too thin and underpadded in key areas. YMMV.

I own a pair of Alpinestars Air Flows. Man they look great and let a lot of air in, also they have zippers that go way up the leg. Only thing is they are a little tight. I wear a 34 waist but they are some tight or perhaps I got fatter over the winter. After 50 fat happens. thanks wilburj:biggrin:

While most days prefer my quality Leather touring pants but for commuting or mild tootling on 85f+ days prefer to wear my cooler Draggin Jeans with knee armour inserts.

They are not as good as leather but think they would be at least on par with average textile/Mesh pants. Know one rider who crashed in draggins at 50mph and found they held up well with Sidi boots protecting his legs from any road rash although he did get a little friction heat through them.

Alter Egos don't offer any abrasion resistance. They are good as overpants worn on top of jeans though. I put a knee down in a turn for a split second and shredded it. I now only use mine for cool days over jeans instead of by themselves.
For summer riding I wear jeans with MX knee pads underneath. If I'm playing in the mountains I wear leathers, no matter what the temp. As long as I'm moving and not sitting in traffic the leather is comfortable.
Check Ebay for good prices on gear. Just know what size you need, most textile pants are general sizes. But textile should not be relied upon for any protection other than the armor in the knees.

Thanks guys.... amazing amount of input and wisdom here. Went with the Deuce Mesh Overpants. Excellent airflow, appears to be solid construction and the fit is nice. THe armor, although admittedly not full on leather pants, should do the job if i get off unexpectedly. will update when it happens :)

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm about to buy a pair of the Icon ARC Mesh pants. Does anyone have any real experience with them? They would be worn instead of jeans in the hotter months, and with jeans in the cooler ones.

My friend just bought them & a he left them in my garage. As with everything Icon makes, they are really more flash than function. I have definitely seen better & worse.

Are they better than jeans? Yes, absolutely no question there. I would wear them with jeans, not with out.

Would I use them? Only for certain things. Normally, I would prefer something more robust. I am thinking about buy a pair to use on the MSF range. I can wear them over shorts so I don't sweat to death.

The discontinued Icon TiMax pants were much better. I think there are much better choices out there.

    KC-10 FE out...

Bonehead question of the day, but I'd appreciate an answer anyway.

I have the First Gear HT Air 2.0 overpants. I always wear jeans underneath, but that still gets a bit hot since these aren't a full mesh pant.

Should I assume that whether I wear jeans or shorts underneath that its not going to matter if I were to go down? (Not exactly like jeans offer protection, but for some reason, it just feels wrong to ride with shorts, even with overpants).

By the way, I think these are a great pant. Everything that Soundmaster said above. I also upgraded the hip armor.

That's about what I thought, KC. I'm looking for a basic pant and ventilation is the key. If a piece of gear is uncomfortable or too hot, I won't wear it. Bad, I know.

I just purchased these no name brand pants off Ebay, and I was amazed at the ruggedness of these pants.

NEW MENS MOTORCYCLE MESH LEATHER ARMOR PANTS BLACK 34:eBay Motors (item 250433249181 end time Jun-09-09 08:53:34 PDT)

The leather is thick biking grade, and all the closures and fittings seem top notch. Nice knee armor, the mesh coverage seems adequate for ventilation, with good leather coverage of the rest. I haven't had saddle time with them yet, but will in coming days as I got the new to me '96 tagged, and insured last week. They are much more substantial than you would think for $89 . . . Best of luck
