Thank you for the lovely welcome everyone, yeah, I wouldn't go down to the village square without the gear on -I like my skin. I see so many guys around here -even on the bigger bikes- with no gear on, so it's nice to see that the online forums all seem to be made of safety minded motorcyclists who promote it. Really great and encouraging.

Can't believe you guys in the U.S. don't have the blue! I won't throw it in your face.....but LOOK AT MY BEAUTIFUL BLUE BIKE!!!

I jest. Anyway, glad to be in VFR world.

    Chris

Very nice but I hate to tell you that Blue is not the fastest color. I got the tri-color Anniversary Edition because it has all the best aspects of all the different color VFR's

    Regards,
    Rollin

Perhaps I should have bought something cheaper first. Before riding this one, I had a Yamaha TZR (125cc) but that was over 5 years ago. But it actually didn't feel so hard to start driving this one.

That's really nice looking, I love the blue ones. Just bought a nice 2000 greenie myself, loving it so far except for the shuddering under 3500 or so rpm

You're lugging the engine. Stop it. Now.

Keep it above 4k most of the time unless you can run it lower without lugging the engine(aka shuddering).

I've also noticed the same. The running is not really smooth under 4000 rpm, so most of the time I try to drive with higher rpm's. Is this really normal?

My '98 does just fine as long as I keep it above 2800 rpms on a level surface.

Sounds like you guys don't have much experience on sport bikes and especially inline fours...they are designed to run at higher rpms for better top end performance. If you're looking to putz around in the lowest gear like on a V-twin or a single you're goin to be dissapointed.

If the engine is struggling you're in the wrong gear. The bike isn't geared like a car... it's not designed to be cruised at 1500-2000rpm. If it's chugging, lugging, struggling, or shuddering you need to down shift. Lugging is bad for the engine. With lower back pressure (aka no exhaust) the bike can run at those lower rpms a little bit better, but the back pressure from the exhaust helps with the torque and mid range.

Jaelum - the lowest RPM you can run the bike is going to vary by the load you're carrying. Think about mountain bikes...if you're in a high gear, it's hard to climb a hill...but the lower you go, the less work it is for you to move the bike up hill. Same thing with a motorcycle. Choose the right gear for the right circumstances.

Oh, I don't ride around at 2800 rpms - I was just replying that I didn't think it was normal that his bike was lugging under 4k. I'm usually go no lower than 3.6k when I'm cruising (like through town at 35 mph). I don't see any reason to be screaming along at 6000 rpms - seems like it'd just burn fuel and put unneeded wear on the engine.

(BTW, soundmaster31, we have the exact same bike hehehe. Mine just clicked over 86k miles and still running like a charm!)
