    ok...

got a crash course in electronics last night.

as far as the stator goes I'm showing about 1ohm on all three legs to all three legs with a reading of "no connectivity" when i take all three to a ground.

with the RR hooked up to the stator I'm reading 0 on terminals 1&2 and 3&4 however there is connectivity.

I also tried looking for the service manual but if I don't have to buy one I'd like not to.

does this mean I have a bad R/R or whats the next test to run?

The manual is available here for free download..... Click on the VFRInfo linky at the top of this page, clicky on VFRWiki, then click on #16, Info and Documents, then click on downloadable parts and service manuals, then click on 1998-2001 service manual and download it to your computer.

Go to ElectroSport Industries - Motorcycle, Dirt Bike and ATV Aftermarket Electrical Parts and there is a flowchart with step by step directions to check your electrical system. Click on the electrical support and then download the fault finding guide. It worked like a charm for me and helped me figure out exactly what was wrong. I did not have an electrical background but was able to follow it. I printed it off and keep it in my service manual.

stator resistance seems OK, but check it with the engine running: disconnect the 3-wire plug and measure AC voltage between any 2 terminals, and you should see about 8 AC volts up to about 60 AC volts depending upon and directly related to engine rpms.

IF stator passes that inspection, then the R/R is the only other component that will cause low (or no) charging.

    thanks!

looks like the r/r is bad...could have saved a lot of trouble if I just listened to the other posts.

next question, did honda keep the same model r/r through the generations? meaning will an 01 rr work in my 99? reason I ask is I found an r/r from an 01 for $99, and a 1999 model for $134.

R/Rs are not the same. 98-99 is different from the 00-01 R/R, unfortunately.
