So its a 1985 vf500. I finally got the bike together and running just fine yesterday. Put 15 miles on it, was idling just fine at 1300. Then today i start it and it quits on me. No problem, i give it a little choke and it idles at 3000. I turn the choke off and the rpms drop then go back up. I then played with the idle adjustment screw to get them lower and the rpms jump to 6000. Now everytime i start the bike its revving so high i kill it after a few seconds.

    Things i've checked:
-the throttle cable has slack and is not open at all
-no matter where i put the idle adjustment screw nothing changes
-the choke lever is not stuck
    -the floats are not stuck
-no air leaks as far as i know

The carbs do need to be synced, but i dont think that explains whats happening.

    Please help!!!

Your carbs would have to be WAY out of sync. I would suspect an air leak. Can you hear the linkage "snap back" when you twist the throttle open?

recheck your boots. you have to pull and recheck everything,if it was at 1300 and now 6000 engine will go. here read this Carburetors/Tuning - SabMagFAQ

thanks for the quick reply's. I refitted the carb and tighten the bolts down. started it up and it ran fine for about 10 seconds, then i saw the rpms start climbing again, turned it off at about 3500. where else could i be leaking from?

just to tell you i had the same problem. turned out that my carb boots were bad. i took them off to clean the carbs and put them back using the old boots and it ran fine all day. the next day i started it and it hit 5000. so i took off the carbs and had two torn carb boots. ordered new ones which you can get at Motorcycle Parts, Motorcycle Accessories by BikeBandit.com for 13 bucks apiece i think. put them on and havent had a problem since. hope it helps cheers. btw im riding a 86 vfr700

also i forgot the carb boots have a top and bottom check them the top will say (carb) this side goes face up on the motor

I bet thats it, in the 3 or 4 times ive taken those carbs off in the last week, i bet i wore the boots out, also 2 of the boots did get stuck to the carb and i may have put them in upside down. Ill have to check that out, as much of a pain it is to pull the carbs off, one more couldn't hurt.

thanks so much for the help
    i hope this solves it

are these the cause of my air leak or should i be searching for something bigger?

This bike is driving me nuts!
The new boots came, such a bitch to get them on. i start the bike in the garage and it runs fine so i turn it off, put all the fairings and all that crap on the bike, suit up and walk the bike to the street. then the damn thing still has an air leak! not as big, and i see that one of the boots isn't seated right.

Took the carbs off and now i have a new problem, the throttle valves are not closing when i have both throttle cables attached. the throttle cable that is supposed to to pull them back shut is not working at all, they actually close when i dont have that cable attached. why is that? is the spring in the carb to worn out or is there something wrong with my throttle cables?

edit, cleaned and lubed up the cables, they work now

do you have the cables hooked up in the right spot. maybe it has a kink in it. recheck them.

took a closer look at it, what broke was a support for the little clip that holds the idle adjustment screw. while trying to fix my idle i must have over tightened it putting to much strain on it. nothing some super glue and a little liquid gasket can't fix. this is gonna be the best bike ever!
