has any of you concidered nitrous oxide injection? sure works sweet on my mustang. But then again my mustang has forged pistons. But i know personally that one can run up to a hundred horse gain on a stock small v-8 and as long as it does not detonate major engine failure will not happen. I am not familiar enough on the ignition systems on these machines to even guess how to retard timeing though. On my mustang i have a solinoid to pull back timeing when the nitrous system is armed. I have read though that no timeing retard is needed if you use alcohol injection with the nitrous because alcohol raises the octane conciderably..
What about raising the compression ratio, and running better gas. or better yet e-85 has got a octane rating of 105 works sweet on my dads motor witch is 12.2 -1 compression ratio.. I think e-85 is only available in certain parts of the country though.

If the motor is not detonating, then higher octane is not neccesary.

Nitrous is an option, although probably not a good one. lots of logistical issues, as well as the timing retard issue. IMO the major down side is the instant addition of 20 more HP.

I would not suggest mixing fuels. If your gonna run E85 for the nitrous then put it in the tank too. your gonna end up re-jetting the motor if your gonna go this route.

Raising the compression would make more HP (once you got it tuned in right), & while your in the motor go BIG. displacement = HP.

Im kinda left wondering what the ultimate goal is. If were just messing around having some fun with the bike, then there are a lot of little things to play with. If the ultimate goal is to make a ultra fast canyon carver, then go out & buy a big CBR 1000 RR & be done with it.

Whoaaaa. What is that all about? You can not over charge the cylinders on a normally aspirated FI or carberated motor unless you supercharge or turbo. Most NA motors don't run at 100% volumetric efficiency from the factory. The heads will only flow what they are designed to flow. The cylinder doesn't create a vacuum. It creates more area for the charge to rush into as the piston descends down the cylinder. Which is at 14.7psi. Ram effect (not to be confused with ram air) can change that a little. Which is controlled by the cam, intake length, ehaust reversion, overlap etc. Which you might be able to get around 110% volumetric efficiency. "change the piston stems to produce a longer stroke"?? What are piston stems?? Rods?? The only way to change stroke is either re-grind the crankshaft or replace. The stroke is a crankshaft dimension only. You can only regrind some if you use a smaller rod journal. "cut the heads to allow for the increase in stroke."?? How would you do this and why? The only thing that needs to be done is to relocate the wrist pin height close to zero deck. Depending on the compression ratio you want you might mill the heads(higher cr) or drop the piston in the hole for lower cr or dish them.

Just putting in a "ram air system" you will most likely have to rejet because the AF ratio will be lean. Yes a lean mixture will create more heat. Enough to hole a piston. "There is a specific ratio of combustion in each cylinder, and a compression % that is required to properly maintain the seal"?? This is false. The camber seal is static. Made by the gaskets, rings and final wall hone finish. Now with pressurize intake systems and very high hp racing only motors you can get into ring flutter. Some pistons for those type of motors will have designs to use some of the pressure in the motor to help push the rings out. NOS motors are a likely candidate.

As far as spark goes. You only need enough to create a good bang. Most electronic systems today will do this. Depending on how much fuel you throw in the cylinder and the compression ratio will determine how much spark you need. Most factory built engines today have more than enough even for most modifications you make for extra power. About the only thing you may have to do is change the spark characteristics to happen at the optimum time under most circumstances.

So yes you might be able to make a "Ram Air Sytem" for your bike with out any major hassles of machining anything internal in the motor. Yes you will have to play around with air fuel ratios. Which can be a pain in itself. Will you make more hp? Well may be a little but it won't be big. If you don't understand all the working of carburetors or FI you will have a real fun time. It's possible you could hurt the motor thru detonation, over rich or to lean a mixture. But that's it. You will not hurt head gaskets and such unless your motor is more or less junk now from abuse or lack of maintenance. But you can also learn a hell of a lot by doing. If you need some info on the basics and then advance workings of fuel systems let me know. Or engines for that matter. Or if you'd like to learn about motors in general and very in depth go here: Speed Talk There are some of the countries best engine builders that will answer your questions or all ready have. Do a search on anything you'd like to know.

Just trying to keep the record straight.

yea this is definetely a new world to me.. Im used to 8 cylinders fed by one four barrel holley and four main jets. why the heck are these machines so differant they are still just internal combustion engines.

That's right. All you need is fuel, compression and spark at the right times of coarse. The way you go about doing that.....well there are hundreds of books written about it. That's why a lot of guys are bald! From pulling their hair out trying to get their motors to run they way they want vs the way they built it.

They're not so different, most just suck, squeeze, bang, and blow :^). I too like the idea of Nitrous, more bang for fewer bucks than turbo, supercharger, engine build ...
