A quick date with Google after my last message brought me to the link above.
It's some information that might make you think twice about OEM.
Who's the undergrad M.E., Mat. Sci., etc. looking to do a Masters thesis on something? Beautiful topic IMO. I'd like to get a stipend and lab space and go for it!

After reading calsci and looking at the dissected pictures, I will never buy a Honda filter. Pure 0ne 14610, the longer one, fits my '04 and that's what I will run till there is something better. Amsoil has been at synthetics longer than any of the competition, and thus has earned my loyalty. IMHO. Ryd On.

Well, spending a couple more dollars and getting the Pure One makes a lot of sense. Thanks for all of your input on this topic guy's. Even if we did go off topic a little from the original Oil Preference Question.

I remember reading that article. Do you think he gets money from Puralator? I saw a link at the bottom saying you could buy them from him for $5.xx ea and get free shipping if you order 5 or more. I was thinkking about ordering some for my bikes. I think the napa gold I bought was closer to $10.

I hear ya about being off topic, but some things just need to be said.
I thought the same about sponsorship when I saw the add, but I have also compared OEM to Pure One, and obviously agree with the article on that. I don't think the amount of detail in that site is there just to pump the sponsors. My guess would be the other way around, good info begot sponsorship or sought it to support the site.

    :focus:
Did I say Castrol full syn? Oh ya, I did.

So, does anyone use regular auto oil in their bikes? I have been reading that there isn't much difference.

Go ahead give it a try, I'm curious the out come, ha, but I'm not going to be the guine pig. I've heard the same thing but one thing does come to mind actully two. first off bikes for the most part have wet clutches meaning the engine oil is use in the clutch cars don't have that. other thing is the tranny cars use a differewnt lube for the tranny Bikes again for the most part don't. so I figure that they are way differnt so may argue the point,ok I say then do as you please ,aien't going to bother me one bit if your engine goes by by..

I have yet to change the oil in the VFR but I have been using Shell Rotella-T 20-50 in the Suzuki M50 and it has been working great. Rotella (dino) oil is designed for diesel motors that go 10K-20K between oil changes (cross-country). It has special anti-shear additives that allow it to flow in a wet clutch without degrading much. Additionally it does not have friction inhibitors that may cause a bikes clutch to slip. Finally, it is available at wallyworld for about $8 a gallon.

For filters I use Puralator or OEM.

When I changed my oil this time I ended up using Mobile 1 Clean 5000. So far I have had no problems in the just over 1000 miles I have ridden since the oil change.

    oil preference

Funny you should mention oil. Just completed the first oil change on my new 200vfr. Using honda HP4 synthetic petroleum blend, 10w-40. Now Im wondering if the oem filter was a bad choice. I hope I dont piss off the puralator Gods!!

Good job there matman, Nope OEM filter is a good thing as far as I can tell, have used others in trying to see what the differance is, on;y thing is it's actully a pain in the butt to go and find em, as after market oil filters aren't all that easy to find well around here they in short supply so it seems. Now oil, thats a different subject.

    Oil Preference

BTW I figured since I was changing the oil I would go ahead and change the tires also! The job is not as bad as I thought it would so far. I have decided to go with the dunlop qualifier, but I like the Bridgestone D616, maybe next time.

My MC oil has a higher zinc content for better wet clutch performance AND it's slippery. $8 a quart, but that's cheap insurance. I guess I could just use spit in the VFR's crankcase instead, though. That's pretty cheap. Ha-ha.

Motorcycle Consumer News did an oil filter story and a oil story a while back.
The car oils did not do very well to the MC specific oils in many areas that would seem to be important for a motorcycle engine. Many of the aftermarket filters came out like crap.

Spike << uses Mobil 1 and OEM filters

Years ago we happened to run some Tractor SUpply house brand oil in our racinf 4-stroke. Upon disassembly, it looked as good or better that it did when we ran the $7-8+ racing oils in it!! No notable unusual wear or anything negative at all. Of course, we did change it a lot more frequently than on a street bike, too.

In our 2/ racing engines, we have run everything from teh Man-rec. 10W-30 motor oil to 75W gear lube to ATF. CLutch performance and wear was ok regardless of what we ran. I prefered the gear lube. One of our CR125's went a couple of years on the same clutch running predominatley the 75w gear lube in it. Again, very frequent changes ( each race weekend!!)

I use HP4 Honda oil. I figure that if thats whats in it from mother Honda, then its good enough. But, I also get it at dealer cost. BTW I'm pretty sure that mobil makes Honda's oil, at least it comes in a mobil drum if you buy it in the 55 gal. drum.

I stuck with Amsoil in the newer bike again and the napa gold which is a wixx filter. On the older bike I used castrol. I was thinking of trying something different, but the amsoil was the only motorcycle specific oil here in town. I might try the honda brand next time, or maybe not. I have been pleased with the amsoil/napa combo so far.
