After several years, it's finally time to remove that hideous rear fender. I did several searches on the forums and found a lot of information and photo's on this subject, but none specifically spoke about how to remove that huge license plate light. Should I just cut the wires and tape them up? I'd like to remove the entire light and reflector and simply bolt the license plate up further directly underneath the rear brake light - while removing all extra plastic from the fender with a dremel tool.

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks.

#1, remember the ECU compartment hangs down below the tail fairing so don't cut the fender sides too short unless you want to see that ugly bump. As for the light I just removed it and added the lights-n-bolts and tied them in to the existing lic light wiring. Google or check eBay for the light bolts. No idea if they're legal in Canada? Others have added a clear plastic section to the rear brake light to shine light down on the lic plate. A box cutter, multiple passes, works just as well or better than a dremel, it's very soft plastic.

I simply shorten the fender, drilled new holes and moved the light assembly higher.
Looks great and no problem passing inspection.
Personally the light is not ugly. Its neutral. I suggest to buy nice black plate frame and the whole thing will look nice n neat.

Look in my gallery. I trimmed the fender and moved the light up under the tail light.

I did the same but I liked the stock plate holders so I simply moved the whole Assembly closer to rear light and clean cut the fender and sand papered the edges. It looks stock.

I don't like that you got holes without bolts in them.It looks like something is missing

Yeah, I've thought about adding two more led bolts there....

Since you also have a '98 - the light can be unbolted from the backside of the fendor. Then the leads can be unplugged from the inside of the back end of the tail of the bike and the light assembly can be removed from the bike. (Take the seat off). From the leads in the tail - you can use them to power light bolts or an LED or whatever you want for a licence plate light.

Here's a couple pics of my job......
