Ok I know everyone is tired of all the R/R talk and threads! But I have one more and I'm curious about this.

What is the best R/R on the market to buy for replacement of the old one?
The reason for asking is I don't want to get caught out on the road if the damn thing lets go:kaboom:. Call it preventable break down on the road or maintainence!!!

    Cheers...

To me Honda Stock upgraded part
    31600 - MBG - 305
larger fins is the logical choice.I prefer not to install aftermarket items since most that have end up failing.Electro whatever is one that I won't buy or install.

Some installed R1,suzuki R/R but these don't fit unless you modify the wiring and plugs and that is counter intuitive when you need to install fast away from home on the road.

Just buy the upgraded Honda OEM

A spare one under your seat, is the best.

Otherwise I use Ricks Motorsports Electrics.

Stick with a brand new OEM Honda part.

Small enough to stick under seat. Easy enough to change on the side of the road.

    31600-MBG-305 is the upgraded R/R for a 5th Generation and it's OEM.

Check RUBO's post on this thread! I'm going with that part # to an upgraded and better R/R and it's Honda OEM.

Yeah, but the part systems are showing the 305 for 98-99 and the 306 for the 00-01.. I bet it has to do with the battery voltage sensing wire...

After a brief run in with after 20+ years and never having an RR go bad then, Ha ha a what the H and a bit of research had me picking up one from Ricks, great folks and they have a better in my opinion RR than from Honda, and they'll even cover it for a year. Try that one from Honda. I usually will go back to the factory for the electronic part, but not on this one problem. just one look at the build quality will tell you which one is better not to mention which one holds up, all though it's only been two years It's still going strong, I still believe the problem started with a bad plug, that's a weak spot that doesn't get fixed all that much. It is the weakest link in the chain so if that goes bad it will take out a new RR if not replaced.

I knew I had a photo of the two for comparison, Ricks unit on the left compared to OEM to the right.

I did look at Ricks R/R and it actually has far fewer fins then upgraded OEM part so how does Ricks part better. It almost cost the same as OEM.

You are comparing old OEM with Ricks not upgraded one

Ah- ha, well there ya have it, I didn't trust the OEM one after the fact that many where/are still going bad. I haven't seen a new and improved Honda RR, only thing then is the warranty I'm not overly pushing the Ricks unit over OEM as I still believe or would tend to believe they should be the better, but?? Ricks stand behind theirs for a year.

A lot of people worry about the RR a lot, but fail to address the rest of the charging system, which is probably a bigger part of the RR failure than the RR itself.

Run down the wires from the RR to the stator, and clean all connections, use dielectric grease to insulate the connections and prevent corrosion, and replace any runs of wire that Honda, in her infinite wisdom, has used mechanical crimps to make a single run out of 2 or more pieces of wire (I found 4 pieces of wire crimped together in a single run on my '4th gen).

Bad connections (crimps, bullets, spades, etc.) are where resistance is added to the circuit, resistance = voltage drops & heat; this will stress the RR and can cause premature failure.

Just an FYI, since you're talking about preventive maintenance, this is something you should be looking at also. :)
