To be honest Seb it sounds like all your projects are going to last until next winter.:biggrin::biggrin:

I don't tend to follow the "We do it nice, cuz we do it twice" mentality. It takes time to do things right the first time. This bike will be super when it's done. As for the other projects, all in due time. I'm getting close with this one, so want to keep going w/ it.

I was wondering, you said you are going to put 700 pistons for more compression and megacycle cams. Will you need to modify the pistons for clearance with the new cams? How much more power do you think you will get out of this setup?
Any speed secrets I can find are like gold to me. Still trying to find out how to lighten the bike up and keep it legal.

Canada restricts weight removal from a bike?

No no I mean legal by keeping the lights on and exhaust, street legal rims and tires etc. I know racers remove lights etc. I read that the race bikes managed to pull 70 lbs out of them some how.

Probably a lot easier back then, since the parts all weighed more too! Just think how much was saved by ditching the heavy glass headlight alone!

Oh, and some new pics for y'all...

Finished the brackets for the Accel coils:

And painted them - I did them in flat black like the diaphragm tops, but I'm not sold on it and may add a new coat of gloss black instead of leaving them..

Almost got the new 520 chain installed. I had a 110 link chain from a previous project, but need a 112 for this bike. Someone from the board sent me 6 links of the exact same chain that they had left over, so with two master links and one link of the gift, I can make a good 112 link chain. Problem is, I have one gold rivet-type master, and one silver clip-type master. I don't mind the silver link, but I refuse to use a clip link!!

I'm not sure I like the black sprocket either. I can't imagine cleaning a white one though... God help me!

Lower rad is installed, I need a couple grommets and spacers for the top rad mount so I can get that one in there too. I remember that the two originals were rotted and I had thrown them away, let's hope Honda hasn't discontinued them...

    Oil mod is complete!

I don't think I posted the battery box all finished up:

Here's what I'm thinking of for the brake torque arm - minus the socket, of course:

I'm also thinking of making a new torque arm so I can integrate it, and keep it from looking like a botch job.

And speaking of botch jobs, anyone think I should leave the "Red Bull mod" on the bike when it's done?

I have been watching this thread for some time and have to say, Seb, YOU DA MAN!! Thanks for all the pics and explanations of your build. Your bike is looking FREAKIN AWESOME! If I could get half of what you've done for my VF500 I'd be extatic. I am gonna get started with my own resto very soon, and intend to incorporate as many mods that my budget will allow. Keep up the good work, like so many others I'm excited to see your project finished!

    Thanks very much!

The hose clamp is actually a front brake reservoir mount; it came from Hong Kong via ebay. :)

In order to put the carbs in, I had to first get the throttle cables and wiring harness in place. I ran into more small parts that I need, like starter relay, fan relay, some clips, some rubber mounts, etc.

Here's some new pics. Harness was stripped of all the old gooey tape and re-wrapped with new 3M vinyl electrical tape. All connectors were cleaned and filled with dielectric grease.

Repainted thermostat housing w/ new t-stat installed:

Next thing I'm working on is integrating the new switch housings. I'm using a 1998 VFR800 left switch, and a CBR1000RR slim start/stop switch on the right. only issue I see so far, is that on the VF, the headlight connector is integrated in the VF left switch pod, while the VFR has plugs that connect to a headlight subharness. The VFR subharness includes the headlight and signal relays, while the VF headlight relay is on the left rear side of the bike.

    VF switch end:

    VFR switch end:

The funny part is, that I cracked open the switch pods, and all the wiring inside is the same. Same colors & all. I will verify against both wiring diagrams, but I'm hoping to just de-solder both sets of wiring from the switches, and transfer the VF wiring over to the VFR switch pod. Do you guys think that will work?

Heck ya that will work. I reworked some GL500 switches to work on a CB400F that had different colored wires, but I crossed referenced them to see where each and everyone goes, and boo yaaaaa, works nicely.

Took sometime, but well worth it!!!

    Great work!

Your work looks great. Its really an inspiration to see other guys fix up their VFRs.
I have a first gen. VF750f, so jobs like this give me something to shoot for.
The CBR F2 wheels look great with the black frame. Look forward to seeing more.

helpful hint, make sure to use some dielectric grease on the switch contacts.

They are always being used and the weather does play a huge part in making for some hairy continuity : )

    Cheers

I'll be sure to do that. I already cleaned and greased every single connector in the harness, so I might as well do the switches too.

Oh, I'm sure there will be finished pics, first time start video, ride video, walk-around video... all the good stuff.

But not until I do more work... just ordered a stainless screw kit for the stator and clutch covers, and I did not get to do any soldering yesterday - family first...

I can't tell, but is the part number on those coils 140403? I hope so, that is the correct number. The Accel coils that are for "CDI Ignitions" are not the right ones. It's really confusing...
